Job Description
We are seeking a Mainframe Developer Contractor to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in COBOL, JCL, CICS/IMS, and DB2/IMS and a proven ability to deliver stable enhancements, resolve production issues, and support mission-critical mainframe applications on IBM z/OS.
Responsibilities:
- Design, develop, and maintain mainframe applications using COBOL (and/or PL/I), JCL, and related technologies.
- Develop and support batch processing jobs including job streams, scheduling coordination, restarts, and abend handling.
- Build and maintain online applications using CICS and/or IMS TM, including transaction and screen/program changes.
- Develop and optimize data access using DB2 (SQL) and/or IMS DB with basic performance tuning.
- Conduct impact analysis, estimate effort, and deliver enhancements and defect fixes through the SDLC.
- Perform debugging, root-cause analysis, and resolution of production issues, including participation in on-call rotations.
- Create and maintain technical documentation such as program specifications, job flows, runbooks, and release notes.
- Collaborate with business, QA, operations, and infrastructure teams to ensure stable releases and successful deployments.
- Follow secure coding practices and comply with audit, access control, and data handling requirements.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Advanced proficiency in COBOL (or PL/I) and JCL on IBM z/OS.
- Hands-on experience with DB2 SQL development and/or IMS databases.
- Experience with ISPF/TSO, datasets, job logs, and execution outputs.
- Debugging and troubleshooting skills, including abend analysis and root-cause identification.
- Understanding of SDLC practices, testing methods, and release/change processes.
- Strong communication and documentation abilities.
- Experience level: 6-9 years of mainframe development.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience with CICS and IMS TM for online transaction processing.
- Background in batch scheduling tools and production support rotations.
