Senior Manager, Network Security
Location

Richmond, VA or Lynchburg, VA

Hybrid work schedule required, including both remote and in-office workdays. Core collaboration hours align with standard Eastern Time business hours.
About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Manager of Network Security to lead the strategy, architecture, engineering, operations, and lifecycle management of enterprise network security services.

This position is responsible for leading a team of network security engineers, analysts, and technical specialists focused on protecting enterprise infrastructure across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments. The role will oversee the implementation, management, and continuous improvement of security technologies including firewalls, secure access platforms, network segmentation, threat prevention systems, and security monitoring capabilities.

The Senior Manager, Network Security will work closely with Infrastructure, Cloud Engineering, Security Operations, Risk, Architecture, Application Development, and business stakeholders to ensure enterprise systems and data remain secure, reliable, and resilient. This role also drives operational excellence, compliance initiatives, modernization efforts, and continuous improvement programs designed to reduce cybersecurity risk while enabling business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Team Development
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Network Security Engineers, Analysts, and Technical Leads.
  • Establish team goals, performance measures, professional development plans, and succession strategies.
  • Build and maintain operational standards, engineering best practices, and service management processes.
  • Manage resource planning, budgets, vendor relationships, and strategic initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
Strategy & Architecture
  • Develop and execute the network security roadmap aligned with enterprise technology and cybersecurity objectives.
  • Partner with Architecture and Security teams to define future-state network security capabilities.
  • Evaluate and implement emerging technologies, market trends, and best practices.
  • Establish standards for secure network design across corporate, cloud, remote access, and hybrid environments.
  • Ensure security architectures are scalable, resilient, and aligned with business and regulatory requirements.
Network Security Engineering
  • Oversee the design, implementation, and operation of:
    • Next-generation firewalls
    • Secure web gateways
    • Network access control (NAC)
    • VPN and remote access technologies
    • Zero Trust Network Access (ZTNA)
    • Software-defined perimeter technologies
    • Microsegmentation solutions
    • Cloud network security controls
    • DNS and IP address management services
    • Intrusion prevention technologies
    • Distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) protection platforms
  • Drive security policy governance, firewall rule lifecycle management, and policy optimization initiatives.
  • Ensure high availability, performance, and operational health of network security platforms.
  • Promote automation and Infrastructure-as-Code practices where appropriate.
Operations & Risk Management
  • Establish performance metrics, service-level targets, and operational reporting for network security services.
  • Support incident response, problem management, risk mitigation, and root cause analysis efforts.
  • Partner with Security Operations and Infrastructure teams to continuously improve security posture and operational effectiveness.
  • Ensure alignment with enterprise governance, audit, compliance, and risk management requirements.
Qualifications
Required Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Engineering, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 10+ years of experience in network engineering, network security, cybersecurity, or network architecture roles.
  • 3+ years of experience leading teams and managing technical professionals.
  • Strong working knowledge of enterprise networking and security technologies.
  • Experience with leading network security platforms and security architecture frameworks.
  • Expertise in several of the following areas:
    • Next-generation firewalls
    • Secure Access Service Edge (SASE)
    • Software-defined networking
    • Zero Trust architectures
    • Network access control solutions
    • Cloud networking and security services
    • Microsegmentation platforms
    • Security analytics and monitoring tools
    • VPN and remote access technologies
    • DNS, DHCP, and IP address management services
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and lead through organizational and technological change.
  • Strong collaboration skills with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience managing vendor relationships, contracts, and managed service providers.
  • Experience supporting geographically distributed teams and enterprise environments.
  • Familiarity with industry security frameworks and standards such as:
    • NIST Cybersecurity Framework (CSF)
    • CIS Controls
    • ISO 27001
  • Experience developing and managing KPIs, SLAs, SLOs, and operational performance metrics.
  • Industry certifications such as:
    • CISSP
    • CISM
    • CCNP Security
    • PCNSE
    • Equivalent network security certifications
