Position Overview
We are seeking a highly experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to provide design engineering support within the nuclear energy sector. This role involves collaborating with vendor organizations to drive efficient design, manufacturing, and testing of Reactor Pressure Vessels, Internals, and Mechanical Containment Penetration systems.
The selected engineer will develop design specifications, mature design concepts, support procurement activities, generate drawings and technical documentation, and oversee testing activities. The position requires close collaboration with Project Managers, Technical Project Engineers, Sourcing teams, equipment manufacturers, and cross-functional engineering teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead mechanical component design activities supporting:
- Existing fleet of Boiling Water Reactors (BWRs)
- Small Modular Reactor (SMR) programs
- Design focus areas include:
- BWR equipment design
- Internal components design
- Plant servicing equipment
- Fabrication and installation support
- Mechanical component testing
- Ensure accountability for cost, schedule, quality, and technical accuracy
- Provide technical leadership and mentorship to engineering teams
- Interface with internal and external stakeholders, including customers and regulatory bodies
- Perform engineering calculations, modeling, and design validation
- Lead design reviews and present technical findings
- Support sourcing and fabrication teams with technical expertise
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements
- Prepare invention disclosures to protect intellectual property
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent engineering discipline)
- Minimum 8 years of experience in the energy industry (nuclear preferred) or similar technical environment
- Minimum 2 years in a technical or program leadership role
- Minimum 2 years working with customers, regulators, and suppliers
- Must meet U.S. Export Control requirements (per 10 CFR Part 810)
Technical Skills Must Have
- 3D Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
- ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel (BPV) Code knowledge
- Mechanical component design expertise
- Engineering hand calculations and modeling
Preferred Qualifications
- 9+ years of component design experience including technical reviews, procurement, and fabrication support
- Experience with industry standards (ASME, AWS, BWRVIP reports)
- Nuclear industry experience (BWR, PWR, or complex mechanical systems)
- Experience with:
- Small Modular Reactors (SMR)
- Sodium Fast Reactor technology
- Control Rod Drives
- Nuclear Core & Fuel design
- Knowledge of lifting and rigging equipment selection (ANSI/ASME compliant)
- Proficiency in:
- Autodesk Inventor (3D CAD)
- ANSYS FEA
- Product lifecycle management tools
- Experience with fabrication techniques (machining, welding, EDM)
- Strong knowledge of GD&T practices
- Familiarity with Lean principles
- Strong leadership and communication skills
