Job Title: AWS Subject Matter Expert (AWS SME)
Location: Jackson, MS (Hybrid, must be onsite at least one week per month)

Position Overview
Seeking an experienced AWS Subject Matter Expert (SME) to support its Cloud Center of Excellence (CCOE) initiative. The selected consultant will help manage and enhance the AWS Organization environment, provide advanced cloud architecture guidance, troubleshoot complex AWS issues, mentor internal staff, and ensure cloud governance and security best practices are maintained.
This role requires a highly skilled AWS professional with expertise in multi-account AWS environments, cloud architecture, infrastructure automation, networking, security, and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
AWS Environment Management
- Administer and maintain the State''s AWS Organization and Control Tower environment.
- Ensure AWS services and resources are configured according to industry best practices.
- Support ongoing cloud operations, optimization, and governance initiatives.
Cloud Architecture & Design
- Design, review, and implement scalable, secure, and high-performing AWS solutions.
- Provide architectural guidance for ITS and State agency cloud initiatives.
- Lead architectural reviews and recommend solutions for complex business and technical challenges.
Troubleshooting & Support
- Serve as the senior escalation point for complex AWS-related incidents and issues.
- Diagnose and resolve networking, connectivity, storage, compute, and security challenges.
- Collaborate with internal teams, agencies, AWS support, and third-party vendors to identify root causes and implement solutions.
Governance & Security
- Implement and maintain AWS security best practices, including IAM, encryption, network segmentation, and Service Control Policies (SCPs).
- Ensure compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
- Support cloud governance frameworks and operational standards.
DevOps & Automation
- Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using CloudFormation, Terraform, or AWS CDK.
- Support CI/CD pipeline implementation and automation initiatives.
- Promote DevOps best practices across cloud operations.
Mentorship & Knowledge Transfer
- Mentor technical staff and help build internal AWS expertise.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, standards, operational procedures, and playbooks.
- Deliver training sessions and provide ongoing coaching to team members.
Vendor & Stakeholder Collaboration
- Partner with AWS and third-party vendors to support cloud initiatives.
- Communicate technical concepts effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Participate in project planning, reviews, and strategic cloud discussions.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor''s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Deep expertise with AWS services including:
- EC2
- S3
- RDS
- VPC
- IAM
- Lambda
- CloudFormation
- Experience leading cloud migrations or large-scale AWS implementations in complex multi-account environments.
- Strong AWS networking and connectivity troubleshooting experience.
- Experience with AWS Landing Zone implementations and AWS Landing Zone Accelerator.
- Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code (CloudFormation, Terraform, AWS CDK).
- Experience building and supporting CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong understanding of AWS security best practices, including:
- IAM policies
- Encryption
- Network segmentation
- Service Control Policies (SCPs)
- Experience with DevOps practices, container technologies, and serverless architectures.
- Hands-on experience with Docker, ECS, and EKS.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor technical teams and support knowledge transfer initiatives.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and perform effectively in a dynamic environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- AWS Professional-level Certification:
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional
- AWS Certified DevOps Engineer - Professional
- Experience working within government or highly regulated environments.
- Knowledge of compliance frameworks such as:
- HIPAA
- CJIS
- IRS 1075
- Familiarity with ITIL, Agile, PMP, or enterprise governance frameworks.
- Experience with hybrid-cloud and multi-cloud environments.
- Working knowledge of Python, Bash, or PowerShell scripting.
