Job Description:
About the Opportunity
Our client, Caterpillar, is seeking an Autonomous Systems Integration Engineer to support the development of next-generation autonomous haulage solutions used in mining operations worldwide. This role is focused on robotics, autonomy, hardware integration, system-level testing, and requirements development, rather than software programming.
You will work with a highly collaborative engineering team responsible for the onboard autonomy systems that enable Caterpillar's autonomous mining vehicles. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge autonomous technology while gaining exposure to vehicle-level system design, validation, and integration.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the integration of autonomous vehicle systems and hardware components.
  • Contribute to onboard system design decisions for autonomous haulage machines.
  • Analyze system requirements and assist with requirements decomposition and solution development.
  • Spend approximately 20% of your time working with system requirements and hardware-related documentation.
  • Evaluate potential technical solutions and perform tradeoff analysis.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve system-level hardware and integration issues.
  • Coordinate with hardware, software, validation, and platform teams to ensure successful implementation and testing.
  • Support validation activities and system-level testing of autonomous vehicle hardware.
  • Document designs, integration strategies, and technical decisions.
  • Assist in coordinating hardware availability and delivery across multiple engineering teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Robotics, or a related technical field.
  • 2-4 years of relevant experience (internships may be considered).
  • Strong familiarity with robotics and autonomous systems.
  • Experience implementing, integrating, and troubleshooting hardware and electronic systems.
  • Understanding of engineering development processes.
  • Experience with requirements decomposition and solution development.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional and global engineering teams.

Top Skills

  • Robotics and autonomy fundamentals
  • Cross-functional collaboration and communication
  • System design and tradeoff analysis

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with autonomous or automated robotic systems.
  • Exposure to mining, construction, agricultural, or heavy equipment industries.
  • Familiarity with product lifecycle processes.
  • Data analysis and issue investigation experience.
  • Knowledge of safety frameworks such as Functional Safety or SOTIF.
  • Experience with simulation tools used for development and validation.
  • Familiarity with CAN, Ethernet, Linux environments, C++, or Python.
  • Experience supporting vehicle-level system integration.

Work Environment

  • Primarily office-based engineering environment.
  • Occasional work in laboratory or validation settings.
  • Potential travel to proving grounds or customer locations as needed.
  • Highly collaborative team environment with interaction across validation, platform, product support, and business teams.
What We're Looking For
This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys working at the intersection of robotics, autonomy, hardware integration, and systems engineering. We are seeking candidates who like solving complex system-level challenges, collaborating with diverse technical teams, and helping bring autonomous vehicle technologies from concept through validation.
Important Note
This is not a software development position. Candidates whose experience is primarily focused on software programming, PLC programming, or coding-only responsibilities may not be a fit. The emphasis is on autonomy, robotics, hardware implementation, system integration, requirements, testing, and troubleshooting.
