Summary

Job Title: L3 Network Engineer –
Location: Remote (US)/Dallas
Duration: Long Term

Job Description:

Role Summary (L3 Network Engineer)
L3 engineers will execute site-by-site migration cutovers, validate routing and traffic flows end-to-end, perform targeted troubleshooting, and coordinate with L4 escalation where needed. They will follow standardized Method of Procedure (MoP), maintain change logs, and provide post-cutover artifacts.

1) Scope of Work (What L3 Will Do)
  1. Pre-Checks & Peering
    • Verify ICMP reachability to Adva NID and new MPLS CE/PE endpoints.
    • Validate empty BGP peering with the new provider (session state, timers, ASN, MD5 if used).
    • Verify that port 4 connectivity between FW1 and FW2 is in place and functioning.
  2. Current State Validation
    • Confirm incumbent MPLS is UP and site is not on 5G (CradlePoint).
    • Capture baseline routing table and path selection (data center ↔ site).
  3. Prepare Route Exchanges (New MPLS)
    • Stage BGP neighbors, route maps/policies, communities, local-pref/med, and filters (no traffic shift yet).
    • Confirm prefix visibility (received/advertised but not yet preferred if using dry-run/soft policies).
  4. Controlled Failover Drill
    • Shut the firewall port connected to the incumbent MPLS, validate site fails over to 5G as designed.
    • Confirm critical services function over 5G (quick health check).
  5. Enable Route Exchanges on New MPLS
    • Bring up BGP policy to allow intended prefixes.
  6. Traffic Validation (New MPLS)
    • Confirm traffic now flows over new MPLS (routing tables, traceroute, NetFlow, path metrics).
  7. End-to-End Functional Tests
    • Validate routing adjacencies, prefixes learned/advertised, ECMP if applicable.
    • Telephony test: inbound test calls to site to confirm call quality (MOS where available, packet loss/jitter).
    • Data path tests: ICMP/HTTP/S to in-store servers from DC and reverse (DC → site; site → DC).
  8. Communication & Handover
    • Communicate cutover success, attach test results and logs, and update trackers (CMDB/ITSM, change record, migration register).
  9. Troubleshooting & Escalation
    • Investigate routing/policy/peering issues; engage assigned L4 per escalation matrix when needed.
    • Roll back per MoP if success criteria are not met within the allowed window.
