Mainframe Production Support Engineer – Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Mainframe Production Support Engineer to support and maintain critical mainframe applications and production environments. The ideal candidate should have strong experience in mainframe technologies, incident management, batch job monitoring, troubleshooting, and production support processes.

Responsibilities

• Provide production support for mainframe applications and systems in a 24x7 environment.
• Monitor daily batch jobs, system alerts, and application performance.
• Analyze and resolve production incidents, defects, and application failures within SLA timelines.
• Perform root cause analysis (RCA) for recurring production issues.
• Support and maintain mainframe applications using COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, IMS, and VSAM.
• Coordinate with development, infrastructure, and business teams for issue resolution and deployments.
• Execute job scheduling, batch processing, and recovery procedures.
• Participate in on-call support, release activities, and weekend deployments as needed.
• Create and maintain operational documents, support procedures, and knowledge base articles.
• Ensure system stability, availability, and performance optimization.
• Support change management, problem management, and incident management activities.
• Work with monitoring and ticketing tools such as ServiceNow, Control-M, CA7, or similar tools.

Required Skills

• Strong experience in Mainframe Production Support.
• Hands-on experience with COBOL, JCL, DB2, CICS, IMS, VSAM, and z/OS.
• Experience in batch job monitoring and scheduling tools like Control-M, CA7, or OPC/TWS.
• Knowledge of incident management and troubleshooting production issues.
• Experience with file transfers, job abends, restart/recovery processes, and performance tuning.
• Familiarity with ITIL processes and ticketing tools such as ServiceNow or Remedy.
• Good understanding of SDLC and production deployment processes.
• Strong analytical, debugging, and communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in Banking, Financial Services, Insurance, or Healthcare domains.
• Exposure to MQ, FTP/SFTP, Abend-Aid, File-Aid, or Changeman.
• Knowledge of automation and monitoring tools.
• Prior experience in L2/L3 production support environments.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.

Nice to Have

• Experience with DevOps/support automation in mainframe environments.
• Knowledge of cloud integration or distributed systems connected with mainframe applications.
