About the Role
Our client, a leading Fortune 500 retailer with a sophisticated digital commerce and advertising technology ecosystem, is seeking a Senior Development Engineer to help build and enhance large-scale advertising technology platforms. This role focuses on developing highly scalable backend systems that support digital advertising solutions, data-driven decision-making, and customer engagement across a high-volume enterprise environment.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on engineer with strong expertise in Kotlin, distributed systems, microservices architecture, and backend platform development. You will play a key role in designing resilient systems, evaluating emerging technologies, mentoring engineers, and driving engineering best practices.

Job Description
Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-performance backend applications using Kotlin and microservices-based architectures.
  • Architect and implement resilient distributed systems capable of supporting high-volume, enterprise-scale workloads.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and conduct proof-of-concept initiatives to assess scalability, performance, maintainability, and cost effectiveness.
  • Lead technical design sessions, architecture reviews, code reviews, testing strategies, and troubleshooting efforts.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to create and document robust system architectures, workflows, and process flows.
  • Mentor and support other engineers while providing technical leadership across multiple initiatives.
  • Improve system reliability, resiliency, monitoring, and disaster recovery capabilities.
  • Establish and promote data quality standards across data ingestion, processing, storage, and operational workflows.
  • Drive engineering excellence through automation, CI/CD practices, testing, observability, and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of advertising technology solutions that align with business and platform objectives.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
 
  • Strong hands-on experience developing and deploying production applications using Kotlin.
  • Experience with Java/J2EE application development.
  • Strong knowledge of Spring Boot and microservices architecture.
  • Experience designing and building RESTful APIs.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems and scalable backend architectures.
  • Experience working in monorepo-based development environments.
  • Experience with event-driven systems and streaming platforms such as Kafka.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience with databases including one or more of the following:
    • PostgreSQL
    • MongoDB
    • Cassandra
    • Elasticsearch
  • Proficiency with automated testing frameworks including JUnit and integration testing methodologies.
  • Experience using observability and monitoring tools such as:
    • Elasticsearch
    • Logstash
    • Kibana
    • Grafana
  • Experience with DevOps methodologies, CI/CD pipelines, and automated deployment processes.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working within Advertising Technology (AdTech) environments, including DSPs, SSPs, Ad Servers, or related platforms.
  • Experience with Python development.
  • Experience with workflow orchestration and data pipeline tools such as Oozie.
  • Knowledge of digital advertising technologies, data platforms, and campaign delivery systems.
  • Experience designing technical solutions that support advertising and business objectives.
  • Experience working in large-scale retail, e-commerce, or digital platform environments.
