Position Overview
An IBM Tivoli Output Manager (TOM) for z/OS professional is responsible for managing, controlling, archiving, distributing, and securing mainframe output (reports, spool data, SYSOUT) across enterprise environments. The role supports operations, compliance, and user access to critical outputs generated by batch and online systems.
Key Responsibilities
Output Management & Distribution
- Manage JES spool output (SYSOUT) and ensure proper capture, retention, and archiving
- Configure and maintain Tivoli Output Manager policies for report distribution
- Automate output routing to users, printers, datasets, or external systems
- Ensure timely delivery of business-critical reports
Installation & Configuration
- Install, configure, and upgrade Tivoli Output Manager in z/OS environments
- Customize output definitions, indexing, and retention rules
- Integrate TOM with JES2/JES3, SDSF, and security tools
Monitoring & Production Support
- Monitor output queues, report generation, and job outputs
- Troubleshoot failures related to spool, report capture, or distribution
- Support production batch cycles and ensure high availability
Security & Compliance
- Implement access controls for reports and archived outputs
- Ensure compliance with data retention and audit policies
- Support encryption, masking, and secure report delivery
Performance & Storage Optimization
- Analyze spool usage and optimize output storage
- Tune system for efficient report processing and retrieval
- Manage archival processes to avoid spool overflow
Integration & Collaboration
- Work alongside automation tools (NetView, SA z/OS)
- Work alongside scheduling tools (IWS, ESP)
- Work alongside repository and archival solutions
- Participate in on-call rotation and DR exercises
- Liaise with IBM support and vendors for issue resolution
Required Technical Skills
Core Skills
- IBM Tivoli Output Manager for z/OS
- JES2/JES3, SDSF, JCL
- z/OS fundamentals (TSO/ISPF, dataset management)
Good to Have
- REXX scripting for automation
- Exposure to other Tivoli products (NetView, SA z/OS)
- Experience with Report Distribution / Document Archiving solutions
Soft Skills
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical capability
- Ability to work in 24x7 production support environments
- Good communication with business and operations teams
Experience Level: 7–10 years (mid-level TOM admin/support)
