Cybersecurity Engineer

Location: Celina, TX
Duration:
6+ months, with salary conversion up to $124000/yr

Schedule: Monday-Thursday, 10-hour shifts (Fridays off)

Work Model: Fully onsite initially; transitions to 1 day remote per week upon permanent conversion

About the Role:
  • The Cybersecurity Engineer is responsible for establishing and maintaining the information security program for a growing municipal organization, ensuring that data, systems, networks, and critical infrastructure are protected against unauthorized access and security risks. This role sits at the intersection of architecture, engineering, security operations, vendor coordination, and program development.
  • Stepping into a fast-paced environment, you will be expected to hit the ground running. You will serve as the organization's cybersecurity subject matter expert, proactively monitoring, investigating, and responding to threats while simultaneously building foundational practices to establish a dedicated cybersecurity function. Reporting directly to the Director of Technology, you will conduct thorough discovery across current environments, blueprint an overall security framework, and carry that strategy through implementation with a high degree of autonomy and ownership.

Responsibilities:
  • Review alerts from security tools and external providers, investigate suspicious activity, and coordinate with vendors and internal IT staff to drive incidents through to resolution.
  • Implement and improve security controls across networks, infrastructure, and applications, applying practical Zero Trust principles-specifically addressing north-south and east-west traffic, edge protection, and multi-layer controls.
  • Conduct continuous discovery across the environment, identify vulnerabilities, evaluate penetration testing findings, and take full ownership of remediation efforts.
  • Partner with application and infrastructure teams to understand their distinct environments, identify coverage gaps, and integrate practical security changes.
  • Develop and enforce foundational cybersecurity policies, procedures, and repeatable response practices, establishing clear escalation workflows and control maintenance standards.
  • Manage network security controls, including firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), managed detection and response (MDR) platforms, data loss prevention (DLP), and certificate management.
  • Ensure organizational compliance with applicable regulations and frameworks, including CJIS, PCI, NIST, and ISO standards.
  • Support business continuity, disaster recovery, and infrastructure resilience initiatives.
  • Communicate significant risks, progress, and strategic roadblocks directly to leadership, executing solutions independently.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, or a related field (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • 10 years of progressive cybersecurity experience with deep expertise in security operations, risk management, incident response, network security, and compliance.
  • Proven ability to design, implement, and explain Zero Trust architectures beyond basic authentication.
  • Strong technical background in network fundamentals, packet analysis, edge protection, application-level authentication, and access controls.
  • Experience managing third-party security vendors, evaluating tool coverage gaps, and acting on vulnerability reporting or escalations.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Industry certifications such as CISSP.
  • Proven experience building a security framework or program from the ground up, moving strategies from planning through execution.
  • Exceptional cross-functional leadership skills, with a track record of successfully partnering with fragmented IT teams to align security requirements with technology initiatives.
