System Architect – Athenahealth (Ambulatory EHR)

Job Summary

We are seeking a seasoned System Architect with strong expertise in athenahealth platform and ambulatory EHR environments to support enterprise-level healthcare initiatives. This role will lead solution discovery, architecture design, and implementation strategy for ambulatory systems, including new implementations, practice acquisitions, and system conversions.

The ideal candidate will bring deep knowledge of athena Clinicals, integrations, and ambulatory workflows, along with strong collaboration skills to partner with clinical, business, and technical stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead discovery sessions for ambulatory initiatives and projects
• Design high-level architecture solutions for athenahealth implementations
• Drive solution design for practice acquisitions, onboarding, and system conversions
• Collaborate with clinical, business, and technical stakeholders
• Develop and maintain architecture documentation and data flow diagrams
• Provide guidance on athena platform capabilities, configurations, and best practices
• Ensure alignment with enterprise architecture and integration standards

Required Skills & Experience

• 8+ years of experience in ambulatory EHR systems
• 5–6+ years of hands-on experience with athenahealth platform
• Strong background as a Systems Architect / Solution Architect
• Deep understanding of ambulatory clinical workflows
• Hands-on experience with athena Clinicals build, configuration, and maintenance
• Experience with ambulatory implementations and system conversions
• Strong experience with API development and integrations within athenahealth
• Expertise in HL7 integrations (ADT, DFT, ORM, ORU, MDM)
• Experience with SFTP-based integrations
• Strong SQL skills, including Dataview reporting
• Ability to create architecture diagrams and data flow documentation

Preferred Skills

• Knowledge of athena Collector and athena Portal
• Understanding of practice management workflows
• Experience with portal administration tools
• Exposure to third-party ambulatory applications / marketplace integrations
• Experience with Lucidchart, Visio, or similar tools
• Experience supporting large-scale healthcare organizations
• Familiarity with other ambulatory EHRs such as:
• eClinicalWorks
• NextGen
• Cerner Ambulatory
