R&D Technician - Prototype & Lab Support


Location: Carlsbad, CA


Pay: $36/hour

We are seeking a hands-on R&D Electro-Mechanical Technician to support engineering teams in the design, build, and testing of prototype devices and electro-mechanical systems. This role is ideal for candidates with experience in lab testing, PCB design support, electro-mechanical fixtures, and R&D prototype development.

This position works closely with R&D engineers and scientists to fabricate, assemble, and troubleshoot test fixtures and prototype systems used in validation, verification (V&V), and product development environments.

Key Responsibilities


  • Design and fabricate electro-mechanical fixtures for R&D testing and prototype builds

  • Interpret engineering schematics and support fabrication of digital, analog, and RF boards

  • Use SolidWorks and PCB design tools (Altium, OrCAD) to support mechanical and electronic fixture development

  • Assist with prototype device builds for characterization, V&V testing, and production validation

  • Execute test procedures, troubleshoot systems, and support external testing labs and vendors

  • Maintain calibration records for lab equipment and ensure compliance with quality systems

  • Organize, maintain, and improve laboratory workspace and equipment readiness

  • Operate test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and digital multimeters

  • Support updates to test protocols, documentation, and technical reports


Qualifications


  • Associate degree or equivalent experience in Electrical, Mechanical, or related technical discipline

  • 5+ years of experience in R&D lab support, electro-mechanical assembly, or test engineering

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and design documentation

  • Experience with PCB layout/design tools (Altium, OrCAD preferred)

  • Familiarity with lab equipment and test environments

  • Strong communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced engineering environment
