The
UI/UX Designer will serve as a key contributor to the modernization and usability of mission-critical applications across DARPA. This role is responsible for translating complex operational requirements from the customer into intuitive, accessible, and highly effective user experiences. The position requires close collaboration with program managers and development teams to ensure that all digital solutions are not only user-friendly but also fully compliant with Section 508 accessibility standards and DoD human factors guidelines.
Responsibilities - Conduct user research with military personnel, analysts, and government stakeholders to understand their unique operational needs, workflows, and pain points.
- Analyze research to create user personas and journey maps that accurately reflect the high-stakes environment of DARPA users.
- Develop wireframes, user flows, and prototypes for complex, data-heavy applications used in mission-critical scenarios.
- Design visually clear and highly functional user interfaces that adhere to Section 508 accessibility standards and relevant military human factors guidelines (e.g., MIL-STD-1472).
- Create and test interactive prototypes to validate design concepts with end-users in operational contexts.
- Collaborate closely with product managers, systems engineers, and government projects lead to translate mission requirements into effective user experiences.
- Contribute to or maintain a DoD-compliant design system and style guide to ensure consistency across multiple applications and platforms.
- Advocate for usability and accessibility best practices throughout the product development lifecycle to ensure all deliverables meet federal compliance mandates.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications - Bachelors degree in design, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), or a related field is preferred.
- 7+ years of full-time work experience, including 5+ years of current applicable experience in DoD
- Proven experience as a UI/UX Designer, preferably with projects for the DoD, Intelligence Community (IC), or other federal agencies.
- A strong portfolio demonstrating experience with complex data visualization, dashboard design, and applications for expert users.
- Demonstrable experience designing and testing products for Section 508 compliance.
- CompTIA Security+ or other IAT Level II Certification compliant with DoD 8570/8140
- Nielsen Norman Group (NN/g) UX Certification, Certified Usability Analyst (CUA) a plus.
- Active Top Secret with the ability to obtain TS/SCI
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: - Proficiency in modern design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD.
- Deep understanding of user-centered design, information architecture, and interaction design principles in a government context.
- Excellent visual design skills with a focus on clarity, efficiency, and data visualization.
- Strong ability to communicate design decisions to both technical and non-technical government stakeholders.
