Trust. Service. Security.

The Data Security team is responsible for safeguarding the organization's most critical asset-its data-by ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability across all platforms and environments. Working at the intersection of cybersecurity, data governance, and privacy, the Data Security team focuses on capabilities such as data classification, encryption, secure data access, and monitoring. The team partners closely with engineering, risk, and business units to embed security controls throughout the data lifecycle-from creation and storage to sharing and archival.

American Express is seeking a Sr. Manager - CyberOps & Assurance to lead a team focused on Data Security Posture Management (DSPM). This is a hands-on technical role where you will help build and scale enterprise data security solutions that protect sensitive data across cloud and on-premises environments.

The candidate will be part of a specialized sub-team focused on Data Security Posture Management (DSPM). This sub-team is responsible for providing visibility into sensitive data across cloud and on-prem environments, identifying data security risks, and driving remediation efforts. The team leverages modern DSPM tools and analytics to discover, classify, and monitor data, ensuring proper access controls and compliance with internal policies and external regulations. The role involves working on initiatives that enhance data visibility, reduce risk exposure, and strengthen the organization's overall data security posture

Why This Role Matters
You will play a key role in shaping how American Express discovers, classifies, and protects sensitive data at scale. This position offers the opportunity to influence enterprise-wide security strategy while building modern, AI-enabled data security capabilities.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the design and evolution of data discovery, classification, and DSPM capabilities across the enterprise.
  • Build scalable integrations with data catalogs, CMDB/ITAM platforms, and security analytics ecosystems.
  • Improve visibility into sensitive data, strengthen risk detection, and accelerate remediation efforts.
  • Leverage automation and AI-assisted workflows to improve efficiency, scalability, and operational effectiveness.
  • Partner with engineering, governance, risk, and business teams to embed security throughout the data lifecycle.

Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in cybersecurity, data security, or data engineering.
  • Hands-on experience with DSPM tools and architecture.
  • Strong knowledge of data discovery, classification, and modern data architectures.
  • Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform), APIs, and Python or similar scripting languages.
  • Experience working with SQL or similar databases.
  • Experience integrating security solutions with enterprise platforms such as data catalogs, CMDBs, and SIEM/SOAR tools.
  • Familiarity with regulatory and compliance frameworks involving PCI, PII, and sensitive data protection.
  • Ability to leverage automation and AI-driven approaches to improve security outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Exposure to AI/ML, GenAI, and emerging data ecosystems.
  • Experience in financial services or other regulated industries.
  • Familiarity with DevSecOps, Infrastructure-as-Code, and data governance frameworks.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers.

What We're Looking For
  • Strong problem-solving and systems-thinking skills.
  • Passion for innovation, automation, and scalable security solutions.
  • Ability to thrive in complex, rapidly evolving environments.
