What would you do?

Job Description:

Position: MSSQL Database Administrator

Location: Washington DC

Mode: 5 days onsite per week

Operational Responsibilities:

  • Install, configure, and maintain Microsoft SQL Server across versions 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2019, and 2022, including version upgrades and maintenance plans.
  • Apply SQL Server service packs, cumulative updates (CUs), hotfixes, and security patches as required.
  • Develop and implement disaster recovery (DR) strategies and conduct DR tests for mission-critical databases to ensure high availability.
  • Maintain and manage databases hosted in Azure environments.
  • Identify and troubleshoot blocking, deadlocks, index fragmentation, and high CPU utilization queries.
  • Utilize Dynamic Management Views (DMVs) and DBCC commands for performance monitoring and troubleshooting.
  • Configure, maintain, and troubleshoot transactional replication setups.
  • Implement high availability (HA) solutions including clustering, database mirroring, log shipping, replication, and Always On availability groups.
  • Perform database refreshes different environments safely and efficiently.
  • Manage database capacity by planning data archiving and file movement strategies to optimize storage utilization.
  • Standardize SQL Server environments by establishing installation, configuration, storage, CPU, memory, account, and security guidelines following industry best practices and standards.
  • Conduct performance tuning and query optimization using SQL Profiler, Database Tuning Advisor (DTA), Perfmon, DMVs, DBCC, and proactive health checks.
  • Work with Business Intelligence (BI) components including SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS).
  • Lead and support the migration of databases and BI components including SSRS and SSAS.
  • Develop PowerShell and T-SQL scripts for automation and troubleshooting.
  • Develop and maintain stored procedures, triggers, functions, and joins.
  • Enhance, troubleshoot, and maintain existing SSRS reporting services and reports.
  • Apply ITIL processes including Incident, Service Request, Change, and Problem management according to organizational standards.
  • Manage database backup and restoration using tools such as Veritas backup software.
  • Administer security management including auditing, login, user creation and permission management to ensure secure database environments.

Functional Responsibilities:

  • Proactively analyze support ticket trends and implement permanent solutions to reduce recurring issues.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills with proficiency in technical writing and presentations.
  • Work independently or collaboratively in a team to achieve critical business objectives and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Coordinate change review meetings and manage incident resolution within Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
  • Maintain logs for risks, issues, and actions; escalate and report as appropriate.
  • Prepare and submit management reports on a daily, weekly, monthly, or ad hoc basis.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to analyze technology requirements and develop functional specifications.
  • Present and implement technological alternatives to streamline processes and enhance productivity.
