A Brief Overview

Burns & McDonnell is seeking a driven and analytical Transmission Engineer (Scoping) to specialize in the critical front-end scoping phase of our transmission line projects. This hybrid role combines technical engineering expertise with strategic project planning to ensure projects are well-defined, technically feasible, and set up for success from day one. The Transmission Engineer (Scoping) will be responsible for confirming client needs, developing preliminary designs and routing studies, and preparing comprehensive scope, schedule, and budget documentation for handoff to the detailed design team.

This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys the problem-solving and analytical aspects of design but also excels at high-level planning, risk assessment, and stakeholder communication.

What you will do

• Review details provided by project sponsor and research existing information and details to determine if any items need to be clarified with other stakeholders
• Develop high level scope of work based on sponsor requests and results of research performed and information received from stakeholders
• Utilize PLS-CADD to review existing models and occasionally perform preliminary design work or coordinate with other engineers and designers to have work performed
• Document assumptions and points of clarification related to project scope, schedule and budget
• Attend regular client meetings to present and update on the status of project scope and budget development
• Manage stakeholder request and questions
• Develop high level project schedules following client templates
• Input project information into clients estimating software (Sage experience preferred)
• Assists in the transmission line design of projects from the conceptual phase
• Assists in designing transmission line components for project needs and requirements that are set forth by the project managers or to assist in the development of the scope
• Applies basic knowledge of commonly used civil and structural engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures within the civil/structural engineering services industry
• Review existing engineering documentation
• Develop solutions that adhere to client specifications and design standards
• Develop take-off quantities of major material based on the developed scope
• Develop deliverables for stakeholder review and approval
• Adhere to company and client quality control processes in developing deliverables
• Identify additional support estimates required to be completed by others and coordinate accordingly

Qualifications

• Bachelor Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field and a minimum of 3 years of transmission line design, construction or estimating experience. Applicable experience may be substituted for the degree requirement.
• Ability to work independently or in groups, think creatively and analytically, and make quick and sound decisions.
• Basic knowledge in standard civil/structural engineering techniques, principles and procedures.
• Basic knowledge of transmission, substation, or distribution design experience preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
• Proficient computer skills (e.g. Microsoft Office Suite).
• Basic computer skills (e.g. AutoCAD, MicroStation, Sage, Google Earth, PLS-CADD), and civil/structural analysis programs.
• Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem solving skills.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
• Demonstrate ability to self-perform and to review the work of others
• Engineers in Training-EIT Certification preferred.
