The Boeing Company has an exciting opportunity, through our IAM/Boeing Joint Apprenticeship Program, for Manufacturing Machinist Apprenticeship in the Puget Sound region in Washington State!

This comprehensive 4-year training program consists of 8,000 hours of paid on-the-job training and essential classroom education, designed to equip you with the skills needed to excel as a manufacturing machinist. You will attend school for a minimum of 144 unpaid hours per school year, registered through a local Community and Technical College. Your wages as an apprentice will be defined in Article 17 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the International Association of Machinists District 751 and The Boeing Company, with progression to a higher wage step for every 1,000 hours of recorded on-the-job training until completion. Upon graduation from the apprenticeship, you will be placed in the target job at the maximum rate and receive a journey-worker certificate and card recognized worldwide.

Apprentices will learn the following tasks to become proficient as a journey-level graduate of the program: Set up and operate various conventional and numerical control machine tools to fabricate close tolerance, high quality parts from metals, plastics, and composite materials, often in a cellular manufacturing environment. In addition to machine training, the Manufacturing Machinist apprenticeship includes use of precision measuring tools, trade related bench work, inspection, numerical machine programming, heat treat, layout operations, tool grinding, and machine related processes.

Applicants should have a strong willingness and aptitude for learning, problem solving, and judgement, as well as a mindset for continuous improvement.

Eligibility: Applicants must be at least 18 years of age; must be eligible for hire or rehire at Boeing; must never have been enrolled in or completed an IAM/Boeing Joint Apprenticeship program; must have a GED or a high school diploma; and must have US person status as defined by Boeing.

Proficiency in English & Math must be verified through the following:

  • Completion of English 99 or higher OR a college placement test with results and placement into English 101 or higher.

  • Completion of Intermediate Algebra in the last 5 years OR a college placement test with results and placement into Precalculus, Trigonometry or higher.

*Placement tests must have been taken in the last 5 years. ?

**We do not accept self-placement tests.

Apprenticeship Minimum Qualifications can be met by one of the two ways listed below and verified via transcripts, certifications/degrees and resume.

Vocational courses:

  • Basic Blueprint Reading or equivalent

  • Basic Precision Measuring Tools or equivalent

  • Milling Machine: Conventional or CNC

  • Lathe: Conventional or CNC

1-year work experience in similar field below:

  • Boring Mills (Vertical, Horizontal)

  • Computer Numerical Control

  • Drills (Radial, Press, NC)

  • Grinding (Internal, External, Surface, Thread)

  • Heat Treat

  • Jig Bore, Jig Grinder

  • Lathes (Conventional, NC, CNC, Turret)

  • Layout (Conventional, CMM)

  • Mills (Conventional, NC, CNC, Profile)

  • Tool Grind

Target Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with and interpret prints, sketches, diagrams, specifications, verbal information, handbook formulas, job layouts, etc., and use shop mathematics including trigonometry and geometry.

  • Perform layout necessary to accomplish own work assignment.

  • Perform assembly work and surface finishing as required.

  • Use and operate all precision measuring instruments and various methods necessary to complete and check own work assignment. Provide part quality information and statistics as required.

  • Select proper tools, fixtures, machine attachments, equipment, etc., necessary to complete work assignment.

  • Prepare and adjustments as required to ensure proper machine operation.

  • Monitor machining system operations including electrical/electronic and mechanical diagnostics and cutter, probe, and sensor data and make appropriate adjustments.

  • May include programming and operation of NC and CNC machines.

Physical Demands and Potential Hazards:

  • Perform physical tasks that include lifting weights ranging from 10-15 lbs to 15-35 lbs.

  • Engage in various movements such as reaching, handling, turning, twisting, lifting, lowering, climbing, balancing, bending, kneeling, crouching, and squatting.

  • Work in environments that may involve contact with metals, solvents, and coolants.

  • Operate in proximity to moving parts and tools, sharp cutters, and potential slipping hazards.

  • Adapt to varying noise levels and atmospheric conditions.

  • Utilize personal safety gear to protect face/eyes, hands/arms, and feet while performing job duties.

This position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a ?US Person? as defined by 22 C.F.R. 120.15 is required. ?US Person? includes , U.S. National, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

This position is expected to be 100% onsite. The selected candidate will be required to work onsite at one of the listed location options.

Basic Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Experience doing jobs or tasks where you had to apply Math skills such as: Algebra, geometry and/or trigonometry.

  • Experience reading engineering blueprints and drawings.

  • Experience working with precision measuring tools.

  • Experience operating manual mill and manual lathe machines.

  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.

Education & Experience:

High School Graduate or the equivalent. Proof of successful completion is required.

Relocation:
