About the Role

Senior Software Engineer - Enterprise Search

POSITION

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to contribute to the ongoing development and enhancement of our enterprise search platform, which powers content discovery and knowledge access across our Investment and Research organization.

This role will focus on expanding our Search platform capabilities, improving search quality, performance and resiliency, integrating new data sources, and delivering search-driven features for internal applications. You will work closely with the our Lead Search Engineer, taking on significant technical responsibility and contributing to the platform's continued evolution and operational excellence.

The ideal candidate is a strong backend engineer with meaningful experience building and operating search solutions in production environments. Deep familiarity with OpenSearch or Elasticsearch is strongly preferred, but experience with comparable search technologies is also valued.

Responsibilities
  • Design and implement new search-driven features and enhancements within our existing enterprise search platform.
  • Develop and maintain backend services and APIs that leverage search capabilities across multiple internal systems.
  • Improve search relevance, performance, and usability through thoughtful index design, query optimization, and ranking strategies.
  • Expand and maintain ingestion pipelines to incorporate structured and unstructured data from enterprise systems.
  • Optimize indexing strategies, mappings, analyzers, and query patterns to support evolving business requirements.
  • Monitor cluster health and performance, contributing to scaling, resiliency, and cost optimization efforts.
  • Collaborate on architectural decisions, technical standards, and roadmap execution.
  • Partner with application teams, data engineers, and business stakeholders to translate search use cases into scalable implementations.
  • Contribute to testing, observability, and operational best practices for production search workloads.
  • Troubleshoot production issues and proactively address bottlenecks or quality gaps.
Qualifications
  • 6-10+ years of professional software engineering experience with a strong backend focus.
  • Hands-on experience implementing and operating search solutions in production environments.
  • Experience with Elasticsearch or OpenSearch strongly preferred; experience with other enterprise search technologies will also be considered.
  • Practical understanding of:
    • Index design and schema modeling
    • Query construction and optimization
    • Relevance tuning and scoring strategies
    • Cluster sizing and scaling considerations
  • Proficiency in Node.JS, Python, or a comparable backend language.
  • Experience designing and building RESTful APIs and distributed services.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including replication, sharding, and fault tolerance.
  • Experience working with AWS cloud services; familiarity with managed search services is a plus.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, and containerization (e.g., Docker).
  • Exposure to semantic search, vector search, or AI-enhanced retrieval techniques is a plus.
  • Experience in financial services or other enterprise environments is preferred.

The base salary range for this position is:
USD 90,000 - 180,000
This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered when making compensation decisions, including but not limited to skill sets; role; skills and experience; certifications; and education. This range is an estimate, and further details on salary and total compensation aspects will be shared with candidates during the recruitment process.

Base salary is only one component of Wellington's total compensation approach. Other rewards may include a discretionary Corporate Bonus and/ or Incentives, if eligible.
