Description Burns & McDonnell is seeking a dynamic, strategic, and technically grounded Business Line Lead (BLL) to lead and grow our Campus Connectivity business line within the Networks, Integration & Automation (NIA) division.
In this critical leadership role, you will be responsible for setting the strategic direction, driving business development, managing team resourcing, and ensuring operational excellence for campus-scale communications and network infrastructure. A central priority of this role is serving as the primary NIA liaison to our Global Facilities (GFS) practice, embedding network design and design-build telecommunications solutions into high-profile data center and mission-critical facility projects.
Building upon a strong foundational practice, the Campus Connectivity BLL will foster multi-Global Practice (GP) collaboration, mentor engineering and project management talent, and maintain close engagement with technical execution standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Account Alignment & GFS Collaboration
- Drive GFS Relationship: Partner closely with Global Facilities (GFS) leadership and account managers to seamlessly integrate NIA campus connectivity solutions (OSP/ISP fiber, structured cabling, wireless, network architecture, and security systems) into data center client proposals and master planning.
- Design & Design-Build Growth: Position Burns & McDonnell as the premier full-service provider for both standalone engineering design and turnkey design-build campus connectivity infrastructure for hyperscale and enterprise data center clients.
- Market Expansion: Identify new client accounts, emerging technology trends, and expanding service offerings to diversify and scale the campus connectivity business line.
Multi-GP & Cross-Functional Coordination
- Cross-Practice Integration: Collaborate across Burns & McDonnell Global Practices (including GFS, T&D, Construction, and Regional Offices) to ensure unified proposal strategies, seamless project handoffs, and consistent delivery execution.
- National Alignment: Engage with regional offices and remote teams to leverage national capabilities, standardize design criteria, and balance resource distribution.
Team Leadership, Resourcing & Talent Development
- Resource Management: Accountable for managing existing workload and future growth with team via workload forecasting, staffing assignments, and recruitment strategies to ensure optimal utilization and project success.
- Team Building & Mentoring: Build, support, and retain a high-performing team of engineers, designers, and project managers. Champion career path development, technical training, and leadership succession within the group.
- Culture & Accountability: Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and high-accountability team environment aligned with Burns & McDonnell core values.
Technical & Execution Oversight
- Technical Fluency: Maintain a high level of technical understanding across campus telecommunications, OSP/ISP fiber routing, data center network topology, and campus wireless solutions to effectively guide engineering teams and engage client technical decision-makers.
- Quality & Standards: Enforce quality assurance and compliance with industry standards (BICSI, IEEE, TIA/EIA, NIST) across all business line deliverables.
- Strategic Proposal & Execution Leadership: Lead RFP responses, scope definitions, cost estimations, and commercial terms. Provide executive-level oversight on key active projects to ensure client satisfaction and profitability.
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in engineering, business, or a related degree from an accredited program and 7 years of relevant consulting experience, preferably in the transmission and distribution industry with a transmission engineering design and/or project management focus required.
- Demonstrated results in client and business development.
- Demonstrated results in managing projects, which includes proposal development, contract negotiations, project planning, design team coordination & communication, budgeting, schedule management, and client coordination.
- Expert facilitation, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated success with budget, savings, and/or profit margins in completed projects.
- Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage.
- Excellent planning and analytical skills.
- Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills; and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients
- Expert knowledge of project management methodologies and tools, including the use of Microsoft Project or equivalent.
- Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred.
