We are looking for a Staff Software Engineer to provide technical leadership and hands-on engineering for Trim's Financial Wellness platform. This role is ideal for a senior technologist who thrives in ambiguous problem spaces, leads through influence, and drives high-impact technical initiatives across teams.

In this role, you will work closely with Product, UX, Engineering Managers, and other senior engineers to shape platform architecture, guide technical direction, and deliver scalable, high-quality software that improves the financial wellness of our customers. This is a senior individual contributor role that blends deep technical expertise, system-level thinking, and cross-functional leadership.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, implementation, and evolution of complex, distributed systems supporting customer-facing financial wellness products
  • Take ownership of cross-functional technical initiatives, driving them from problem definition through production delivery
  • Shape and influence platform architecture, technical standards, and engineering best practices across teams
  • Collaborate closely with Product Management, UX, Engineering Managers, and other stakeholders to align technical solutions with business objectives
  • Break down ambiguous, complex problems into actionable technical plans, identifying risks, trade-offs, and dependencies
  • Apply industry-leading design principles, patterns, and modern development practices, including cloud-native architectures and Agile delivery
  • Serve as a technical authority and trusted advisor, clearly articulating complex technical concepts and trade-offs to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Mentor and guide engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and technical coaching, raising the overall engineering bar
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and continuous improvement, driving adoption of new technologies and approaches where they add value
  • Take accountability for technical outcomes, system reliability, and long-term platform health

Requirements
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining distributed systems in production environments
  • Strong proficiency across multiple programming languages and technologies, with the ability to learn new stacks quickly
  • Hands-on experience in frontend development using Angular, React, JavaScript/TypeScript, and modern build tools as well as backend technologies like Ruby on Rails, Node.js
  • Experience delivering customer-facing applications in a cloud-native environment (AWS preferred; Azure or Google Cloud Platform acceptable)
  • Strong DevOps experience, including hands-on work with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code, containerization, monitoring, and production operations
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, deployment strategies, observability, and reliability engineering practices
  • Strong understanding of system design, APIs, data flows, and service-to-service communication
  • Demonstrated ability to operate with a high degree of ownership, autonomy, and accountability
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical thinking, and communication skills
  • Commitment to continuous learning and sharing knowledge with others

Target base salary range is $130,000-$160,000 for Baltimore MD, which is based on various factors including skills and work experience. In addition to base salary, this role is eligible for a competitive compensation program that is based on individual and company performance.
