Responsibilities
  • Develop and review medium-voltage and low-voltage electrical system designs.
  • Prepare single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, equipment layouts, cable schedules, and interconnection drawings.
  • Develop protective relay philosophies, protection schemes, relay element selections, and preliminary relay settings.
  • Review relay logic, AC and DC control schematics, trip and close circuits, lockout schemes, and communication-assisted protection systems.
  • Support relay testing, commissioning, functional testing, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Prepare engineering calculations, technical specifications, design criteria, equipment data sheets, and technical reports.
  • Evaluate vendor drawings, equipment submittals, and technical proposals for compliance with project requirements.
  • Coordinate electrical design interfaces with civil, structural, mechanical, controls, utility, and construction teams.
  • Participate in design reviews, field investigations, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, and project commissioning.
  • Identify technical risks, design discrepancies, and constructability issues, and develop practical engineering solutions.
  • Ensure designs comply with applicable codes, standards, utility requirements, and client specifications.
  • Perform power system studies, including:
  • Short-circuit analysis
  • Load-flow analysis
  • Protective device coordination
  • Arc-flash hazard analysis
  • Motor-starting and voltage-drop studies

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution
  • Approximately 5-10 years of relevant experience in power system engineering, electrical system design, or protection and control.
  • Working knowledge of medium-voltage and low-voltage distribution systems.
  • Understanding of protective relay principles and common protection functions, including overcurrent, differential, distance, voltage, frequency, breaker failure, and directional protection.
  • Familiarity with electrical equipment ratings, interrupting duties, insulation levels, grounding methods, and protection coordination.
  • Ability to interpret single-line diagrams, control schematics, wiring diagrams, relay logic, and equipment drawings.
  • Working knowledge of applicable standards and codes, including NEC, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA, NFPA 70E, and relevant utility requirements.
  • Experience with power system analysis software such as ETAP, SKM PowerTools, EasyPoweror equivalent.
  • Strong technical writing, calculation, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical assignments and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary project teams.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Engineer-in-Training certification or Professional Engineer licensure.
  • Experience with substations, renewable generation facilities, industrial power systems, or utility interconnections.
  • Experience with protective relays manufactured by SEL, GE, Siemens, Beckwith, or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with relay settings, sequence-of-events records, oscillography, fault records, and event analysis.
  • Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or similar design software.
  • Experience supporting field commissioning, relay testing, equipment energization, or troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of medium-voltage switchgear, transformers, generators, inverters, UPS systems, batteries, and DC control systems.
