Function

The Senior Structural Engineer provides superior level technical services to clients for their projects and technical support requirements, providing technical and administrative direction, policy support and mentoring to subordinate engineers and staff.
Core Responsibilities
Task Level Execution
  • Provide a superior level of proficiency and technical knowledge of discipline or area to enable the engineer to serve as a resource for the company's efforts to provide design and technical services to its clients.
  • Identify, formulate and initiate solutions to complex problems requiring single discipline involvement and single discipline analytical tools.
  • Understand, analyze and construct system architectures and system component relationships.
  • Perform required work activities on an individual basis or within a project team with no need for supervision. Lead, facilitate and coordinate work activity of others including other Salas O'Brien employees, customers, suppliers and alliances at the project, office or client level.
  • Coordinate work activities that affect the quality of administration, proposals, engineering & design, document control, inspection & testing, and commissioning in accordance with Salas O'Brien's Quality Assurance Program.
  • Interpret codes and standards and apply them to design
  • Identify and resolve routine problems that involve the use of conflicting or incomplete information.
  • Look for opportunities to promote new concepts and approaches.
  • Apply engineering talent at the working, project and office level to assure compliance to the customer's and Salas O'Brien's quality and consistency expectations.
  • Develop, review, recommend and implement plans that involve scheduling, budgeting, and resource allocation and project control.
  • Plan and schedule project activities using planning and scheduling tools.
  • Recognize the need for and initiate corrective action to address shortcomings in design or engineering processes that run counter to customer's or Salas O'Brien's quality or safety requirements. Conduct root cause assessments and recommend practical solutions to underlying problems.
  • Master and mentor others on how project profit margins, growth of client business activity and expansion of their understanding and use of Salas O'Brien services impact revenues, expenses and profitability.
  • Perform, supervise and review complex calculations
  • Direct the development of proposals, specifications and design standards at a working, project and office level.
  • Review design output and analyses.
  • Conduct or direct others for on-site systems and facilities inspections for customers.
  • Provide project supervision and monitor progress.
  • Provide training and mentoring for subordinate technical staff and take an active role in personnel development by seeking out client perspectives on the Salas O'Brien products, personnel and services rendered.
  • Actively participate in the Employee Assessment & Development process.
  • Establish credibility and competence with clients on technical issues and possess well-developed personal and presentational skills.
  • Make technical assessments and design decisions involving uncertainty and risk.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned or deemed appropriate of the position by management.
  • Prepare technical reports for supervisors, management and clients.

Scope and Accountability
  • Plan, direct, supervise and otherwise support client projects from proposal to completion. Make decisions at a technical and quality required to support attainment of Salas O'Brien's goals for customer satisfaction and meet corporate earnings objectives.
  • Possess the knowledge and authority to make and assume substantial authority for technical decisions.
  • The incumbent is accountable to the Department Manager, Operations Manager, and Senior Leadership for the proper execution of their professional responsibilities in an ethical and professional manner.
Qualifications and Requirements

Bachelor's or advanced degree in Engineering, Applied Sciences with fifteen or more years' experience in the field of expertise or related fields. It is generally expected that the incumbent will have a PE license and that they will be generally recognized as highly cognizant in their field or specialization.
Work Environment
  • Office environment, construction area or factory floor environment not requiring the lifting or moving of heavy loads.
  • May require climbing ladders, scaffolding, and working significantly above ground elevation
  • May involve working in a high noise ambient, elevated temperatures, dust, dirt, and hazardous chemicals requiring protective clothing.
  • Work may involve traveling to customers' facilities. A valid driver's license or other assured means of transportation to job sites is essential.

The expected base salary range for this role is $140,000 - 160,000 USD per year. Actual compensation will be determined based on a number of factors including skills, experience, qualifications, and location.
