Job Description:

The platform supports employee engagement, communications, enterprise application access, restaurant and meal ordering capabilities, and other workforce-focused experiences that improve daily operations, retention, and overall team member satisfaction.

The architect will serve as the accountable technical design authority for assigned initiatives. Success requires more than technical expertise; the individual must independently drive architecture work from intake and discovery through design, governance approval, implementation support, and operational readiness. The role works across Product, Engineering, Cybersecurity, Infrastructure, Delivery, Operations, and external partners in a highly matrixed environment.

Primary Outcome:

Provide clear, approved, and traceable architecture that enables delivery teams to build and modernize TMX capabilities while ensuring scalability, security, maintainability, performance, and exceptional employee experiences.

Core Responsibilities:

Architecture Strategy and Solution Design:

• Lead architecture discovery sessions with Product, Engineering, and business stakeholders to clarify objectives, scope, requirements, constraints, assumptions, dependencies, and measurable outcomes.
• Create end-to-end High-Level Designs (HLDs) that define system context, logical components, domain boundaries, integration patterns, data flows, technology decisions, and non-functional requirements.
• Create implementation-ready Detailed Designs (DDs) that define microservice interactions, APIs, data models, event flows, authentication patterns, error handling, and security controls.
• Distinguish current state, committed target state, and future-state recommendations; clearly document decisions, risks, assumptions, and dependencies.
• Evaluate solution options and document tradeoffs, architecture decisions, and impacts to cost, schedule, maintainability, and technical debt.
• Utilize PlantUML and other architecture modeling tools to develop clear, reusable architecture artifacts and diagrams.

TMX Platform and Application Architecture:

• Architect and evolve TMX capabilities supporting personalized employee experiences across web and mobile applications.
• Design scalable solutions supporting employee communications, personalized content delivery, enterprise service integrations, workforce applications, and restaurant or meal-ordering capabilities.
• Define and govern microservices architectures built using Node.js and TypeScript.
• Design and support NoSQL data solutions including CouchDB and comparable document-based data platforms.
• Define RESTful and OpenAPI-compliant service contracts for internal and external integrations.
• Establish event-driven, asynchronous, and real-time integration patterns where appropriate.
• Design secure integrations with enterprise platforms including HR systems, workforce management platforms, identity and access management solutions, communications tools, and internal operational systems.
• Ensure solutions meet performance, reliability, availability, observability, and scalability requirements across employee-facing channels.
• Drive architecture decisions supporting mobile application enhancements, modernization initiatives, and digital workplace transformation efforts.

Cloud, Integration, and Modernization Architecture:

• Design solutions across hybrid AWS and Azure cloud environments.
• Define cloud-native architecture patterns supporting scalability, resiliency, observability, and operational supportability.
• Establish integration patterns utilizing REST APIs, messaging, event-driven architectures, and enterprise integration services.
• Collaborate with platform teams to align infrastructure, networking, security, and deployment approaches.
• Support modernization efforts that improve platform maintainability, operational efficiency, and user experience.

Architecture Governance and Delivery Assurance:

• Own architecture artifacts through the full lifecycle: intake, discovery, design, peer review, Architecture Review Board (ARB), implementation support, handoff, and production readiness.
• Prepare for and present architecture solutions within ARBs and technical governance forums.
• Incorporate feedback, track architecture actions, and maintain approval evidence throughout the project lifecycle.
• Maintain full traceability between business requirements, Jira epics, architecture artifacts, technical decisions, implementation work items, and approvals.
• Proactively identify and communicate delivery risks, dependencies, technical debt, and decision needs.
• Review deliverables from engineering teams and delivery partners for alignment with approved architecture and enterprise standards.
• Provide clear architecture updates, status reporting, and executive-level communications regarding progress, risks, and decisions.

Collaboration and Technical Leadership:

• Partner closely with Product Management to shape technically feasible outcomes and accelerate delivery.
• Work collaboratively with Engineering, Mobile Development, Web Development, UX, Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, Operations, and Delivery teams.
• Guide engineering teams without becoming the primary implementer; clarify designs, resolve technical questions, and ensure architectural alignment.
• Influence across teams and vendors without relying on formal authority.
• Mentor engineers and technical leads while promoting reusable architecture patterns and standards.
• Drive forward momentum independently with minimal direction while maintaining strong stakeholder communication and alignment.
• Operate effectively in environments with frequent feedback, active stakeholder involvement, and evolving priorities.

Required Qualifications:

• 8+ years of progressive experience in software engineering, platform engineering, enterprise application development, or digital product delivery.
• 4+ years serving in a dedicated Solution Architect, Lead Architect, or comparable architecture leadership role.
• Proven experience designing and governing enterprise-scale web and mobile application architectures.
• Strong experience designing microservices architectures using Node.js and TypeScript.
• Demonstrated expertise with CouchDB, NoSQL platforms, and distributed data architecture patterns.
• Proven ability to personally author architecture deliverables, including HLDs, DDs, decision records, integration specifications, and architecture diagrams.
• Experience utilizing OpenAPI specifications, API governance standards, and modern API design practices.
• Experience creating architecture diagrams and technical artifacts using PlantUML or comparable modeling tools.
• Strong understanding of cloud-native and hybrid cloud architectures spanning AWS and Azure.
• Experience designing synchronous, asynchronous, and event-driven integration patterns.
• Strong knowledge of authentication, authorization, identity integration, and enterprise security controls.
• Experience presenting architecture solutions to Architecture Review Boards (ARBs), governance forums, and executive stakeholders.
• Demonstrated ability to operate independently, drive ambiguity to resolution, and achieve outcomes with minimal direction.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience supporting employee experience, workforce management, HR technology, communications, or employee engagement platforms.
• Experience with mobile application modernization initiatives.
• Experience implementing OpenAPI governance and API lifecycle management.
• Experience utilizing Jira and Confluence for architecture documentation, requirements traceability, and project governance.
• Experience with enterprise employee identity platforms and SSO technologies.
• Experience governing work delivered by systems integrators, contractors, offshore teams, or distributed engineering organizations.
• TOGAF, AWS, Azure, or other architecture-related certifications.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline, or equivalent experience.
