Summary

Senior DevSecOps & Cloud Platform Engineer

(Expert Individual Contributor - Not a Principal Role)

Role Overview

This role provides Senior-level technical leadership to modernize DevOps and DevSecOps practices across the organization. The position focuses on building secure, scalable, governance-driven CI/CD platforms that enable software engineering teams to deliver high-quality applications faster and more safely.
The engineer will work holistically across pipelines, cloud governance, security automation, and developer enablement, serving as a trusted advisor to engineering teams that may not all have a traditional software background. The role emphasizes enablement, standardization, and automation over manual controls, aligning directly with modern platform engineering and DevSecOps principles.
This is not a Principal Engineer role, but it requires deep expertise, strong influence, and architectural thinking.

Key Responsibilities

DevSecOps Platform Leadership

  • Define and implement DevSecOps-by-default CI/CD capabilities using Azure DevOps and code-based (YAML) pipelines
  • Lead modernization of the DevOps platform, including assessment of current pipelines and recommendation of future-state tooling and practices
  • Design and deliver version-controlled, reusable YAML templates that embed security, compliance, and quality gates
  • Establish Governance-as-Code, replacing manual audits with automated, policy-driven controls

Security Automation & Compliance

  • Perform gap analysis of existing Azure pipelines against internal and external security standards
  • Identify hidden vulnerabilities and non-compliant deployment patterns and produce a prioritized remediation roadmap
  • Integrate security tooling such as:
    • SAST, DAST
    • SBOM generation and tracking
    • Third-party dependency scanning (e.g., Phylum / Veracode)
  • Automate compliance evidence collection and monitoring to deliver real-time, audit-ready reporting directly from pipelines
  • Detect and prevent security regressions automatically during build and deployment

Cloud Governance & Platform Enablement

  • Support and evolve cloud governance frameworks, particularly those aligned with Golden Paths
  • Partner with Architecture, Cloud Center of Excellence, and Security teams to align governance standards with developer workflows
  • Embed governance and security requirements directly into pipelines, templates, and shared services
  • Contribute to Internal Developer Portal (IDP) capabilities, surfacing real-time security and compliance insights for teams and leadership

Developer Enablement & Collaboration

  • Act as a lead technical mentor and guide for teams within the Software Engineering organization
  • Help teams adopt modern DevSecOps practices, even when traditional development backgrounds are limited
  • Translate security and governance requirements into developer-friendly, automated solutions
  • Promote strong software engineering principles within CI/CD and infrastructure workflows

Technology Environment

  • CI/CD & Pipelines: Azure DevOps (YAML-based pipelines)
  • Version Control: GitHub and GitLab
  • Cloud Platform: Microsoft Azure
  • DevSecOps Tooling: SAST, DAST, SBOM, dependency/package scanning
  • Practices: DevSecOps, Platform Engineering, Governance-as-Code, Agile

Required Skills & Expertise

Core Skills

  • DevOps / DevSecOps engineering
  • Azure cloud platform
  • CI/CD pipeline design and automation
  • YAML pipeline templating
  • Git-based workflows (GitHub, GitLab)
  • Agile software delivery practices

Advanced Capabilities

  • Secure CI/CD pipeline architecture
  • Cloud governance and policy automation
  • Observability and application performance monitoring
  • Internal Developer Platform enablement
  • Risk assessment, security posture visualization, and compliance automation

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience designing and implementing enterprise-scale technology solutions
  • Deep expertise in at least two of the following:
    • Application development
    • Cloud infrastructure and networking
    • APIs and middleware
    • CI/CD platforms
    • Virtualization or cloud services
    • Databases and system operations
  • Experience supporting agile product teams, including guidance on technical debt, risk, and architectural tradeoffs
  • Familiarity with Azure DevOps agile planning tools
  • Experience with observability, performance monitoring, and telemetry tooling
  • Insurance industry experience is a plus, but not required

What Success Looks Like

  • Security, compliance, and governance are built into pipelines by default
  • Teams deploy faster with fewer vulnerabilities and less manual oversight
  • Leadership has a real-time, global view of risk and platform health
  • Developers are empowered by clear Golden Paths instead of blocked by process
  • Cloud governance is automated, transparent, and scalable
