DescriptionWe are supporting a large retail Client's Risk Management team, responsible for identifying, analyzing, and mitigating financial and operational risks across ecommerce, retail, internal systems, and operational processes. This includes proactive fraud detection, internal and external investigations, and continuous auditing.
Within this function, the Fraud Controls team supports fraud-prevention initiatives across business units, leveraging data tools, investigative approaches, and real-time fraud-monitoring systems to protect customers, internal teams, and company assets.
Role OverviewAs a Fraud Specialist (Contractor), you will work closely with sr. team members to perform audits, support investigations, and review fraud alerts generated by internal detection systems. You will use SQL, dashboards, and investigative analysis to identify potentially fraudulent activity within large datasets and operational systems. This role is ideal for someone with strong analytical skills, clear communication abilities, and a natural curiosity for fraud patterns and risk detection.
Key ResponsibilitiesFraud Detection & Investigations- Analyze data using SQL and reporting dashboards to identify anomalies, inconsistencies, or potential fraud.
- Review alerts from real-time, machine-learning-driven fraud tools and assess potential risk.
- Conduct structured investigations using internal systems and cross-departmental information sources.
- Support requests for investigative analysis from partner teams, summarizing findings in a clear and actionable format.
- Perform monthly audits and present observations to leadership.
Analysis & Reporting- Use SQL to extract, join, and analyze large datasets for fraud detection and trend identification.
- Utilize Excel (pivot tables, formulas, validation) to support documentation and casework.
- Convert large, complex datasets into clear insights and recommended mitigation steps.
- Identify opportunities to enhance investigative workflows and fraud-prevention controls.
Cross-Functional Collaboration- Partner with internal groups such as Fraud Controls, Asset Protection, Analytics, and Engineering to support fraud-related initiatives.
- Assist in preparing reports for leadership that highlight risk trends and key findings.
- Support subpoena or information-request processes in partnership with legal or compliance teams when needed.
Required Qualifications- Foundational SQL experience with the ability to write queries for extraction, joining, and validation.
- Strong Excel proficiency, including pivot tables, formulas, filters, and data-quality analysis.
- Ability to review and interpret outputs from real-time or machine-learning fraud systems.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to identify patterns in complex data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- High attention to detail and adherence to established documentation standards.
- Self-directed, curious, and motivated to learn new tools and fraud-detection methods.
Nice-to-Have Qualifications- Experience with Azure Databricks or other SQL-driven big-data environments.
- Familiarity with Power BI or similar dashboard/visualization tools.
- Bachelor's degree in analytics, finance, C. justice, information systems, or related field - or equivalent practical experience.
- Experience in ecommerce, online fraud, or digital risk environments.

Additional Skills & QualificationsIdeally, we'd like a candidate who has some familiarity with retail e-commerce (understanding the general flow of online purchases), chargeback activity (bank disputes) and initiating investigations from exception reporting related to credit card fraud and policy abuse. Our Fraud Specialists are usually assigned a set of audits or reports focusing on a certain area (example: return activity) and are expected to review outliers, identify any gaps in our system and log and escalate appropriately.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $35.00 - $45.00/hr.
