Location: Plano, TX, Wilmington, DE, Jersey City, NJ
W2 Position
Position Summary
The Senior Android Developer will design, build, and ship production-grade Android capabilities for an enterprise-scale consumer banking app. The role is hands-on and delivery-oriented, focused on modern modular Android architecture, Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Coroutines/Flow, performance optimization, automated testing, CI/CD, and production support across a regulated mobile environment.
Core Responsibilities
Design and build feature modules in Kotlin using clean architecture patterns such as MVVM and MVI, with clear boundaries, testable units, and independent delivery.
Build declarative user interfaces in Jetpack Compose, including state hoisting, recomposition performance, custom layouts, and interoperability with legacy Views.
Manage asynchronous and reactive state with Coroutines and Flow, including structured concurrency, backpressure, and lifecycle-aware collection.
Integrate mobile experiences with backend services through REST, GraphQL, or gRPC, including offline caching and secure local storage.
Own app performance across cold start, jank/frame time, memory, and APK or bundle size against measurable targets.
Build and maintain automated test suites, including unit tests, UI/Espresso tests, Compose UI tests, screenshot tests, and regression coverage.
Deploy through CI/CD pipelines with staged rollouts, feature flags, and crash/ANR monitoring.
Instrument the app for observability through analytics, tracing, crash reporting, dashboards, alerts, and operational runbooks.
Participate in design and architecture reviews where technical decisions affect downstream feature teams.
Debug complex Android issues, including lifecycle edge cases, memory leaks, threading/concurrency defects, and device fragmentation problems.
Own the vertical from design decision to shipped artifact and leave the codebase cleaner, more documented, and easier for the permanent team to operate.
Required Qualifications
5+ years of software engineering experience shipping production mobile applications.
Deep, demonstrated Kotlin and Android SDK expertise.
Production experience with Jetpack Compose, including state management, recomposition performance, and legacy View interoperability.
Strong grasp of Coroutines, Flow, structured concurrency, and modern Android architecture.
Experience with Android architecture components such as ViewModel, Navigation, Room, WorkManager, and DataStore.
Experience with automated testing and CI/CD for Android.
Experience shipping apps to the Google Play Store at meaningful scale.
Ability to write code, design systems, debug production issues, and support software that real customers depend on.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with modularized Gradle builds and multi-team Android codebases.
Kotlin Multiplatform experience or practical exposure to shared business logic approaches.
Performance optimization experience using Baseline Profiles, Macrobenchmark, Android Studio Profiler, and Perfetto.
Dependency injection experience with Hilt or Dagger.
Experience with networking stacks such as Retrofit and OkHttp, serialization, and API contract design.
Experience with offline-first patterns, caching, local persistence, secure storage, auth/token handling, and mobile security fundamentals.
Experience in regulated industries such as financial services, healthcare, or insurance, where compliance and auditability are engineering constraints.
Contributions to internal tooling, shared libraries, or design systems adopted by other teams.
Operating Environment and Delivery Expectations
Work within a large-institution environment with compliance requirements, audit trails, and change management processes.
Partner with product owners, mobile architects, and adjacent feature teams to take experiences from design mock to production.
Operate with engineering autonomy on the how, while product teams own the what.
Move quickly inside established guardrails and support code that can be defended, maintained, and operated after the engagement ends.
Treat the one-year contractor engagement as a shipped-outcomes role, measured by delivered code, documented patterns, and systems the permanent team can operate.
Suggested Must-Have Screening Criteria
Can walk through production Android applications they personally helped ship at scale.
Can explain Compose state-management decisions, recomposition performance issues, and legacy View interop tradeoffs.
Can describe real examples of cold-start, frame-time, memory, ANR, or crash-rate improvements.
Has hands-on Kotlin, Coroutines, Flow, and Android architecture experience beyond sample apps or prototypes.
Can demonstrate automated testing discipline and experience using CI/CD, feature flags, staged rollouts, and production monitoring.
Can work effectively in a regulated production environment with compliance, auditability, and change-management constraints.
