Haweo is seeking a qualified Improvement Sciences Specialist to support the Naval Medical Forces Pacific (NMFP) Improvement Sciences Directorate in San Diego, CA. The Improvement Sciences Specialist will work within the team to apply improvement methodologies to lead projects, support continuous process improvement initiatives, and contribute to knowledge management activities across Navy Medicine's Pacific region commands. This role bridges the gap between process improvement expertise and practical implementation, working alongside Lean Six Sigma certified personnel
to advance Navy Medicine's mission.
This position is hybrid, with 60% on-site at Naval Medical Forces Pacific (NMFP), 4170 Norman Scott Road, Suite 5, San Diego, CA 92136, 40% remote. Travel may be required to both CONUS and ONCONUS Navy Medicine
What will you do?
Performance Improvement Support:
Support process/performance improvement projects utilizing Lean Six Sigma (LSS) and Get Real Get Better (GRGB) methodologies
Apply improvement methodologies including Lean, Six Sigma, PDSA/PDCA, and Change Management
Analyze existing workflows to identify inefficiencies and bottlenecks
Conduct comprehensive process mapping and analysis
Identify key areas of inefficiency and recommend improvement actions
Develop and implement process improvement strategies
Develop optimized workflows and work with stakeholders to implement changes
Foster a culture of continuous process improvement within organizations at all echelons
Project and Portfolio Management Support:
Support establishment of standardized project management frameworks and methodologies
Assist in training staff on project management best practices and tools from PMI guidelines
Enhance project tracking, documentation, and reporting processes
Establish metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for project performance evaluation
Develop and enhance templates and documentation standards for project tracking
Generate monthly reports on project status, risks, and performance
Knowledge Management Support:
Create instructional materials, deliver training, and provide guidance on SPIDR and other system solutions
Develop solution sets to automate manual or time-consuming administrative processes
Create libraries for standard content (text, graphics, audio, and video)
Consult with customers to refine functional requirements and translate them into design specifications
Identify and propose system software improvements to enhance operational efficiency
Training and Facilitation:
Deliver professional development courses via in-person or virtual/asynchronous modalities
Conduct training sessions for staff on project management tools and methodologies
Provide continuous support and mentorship to staff post-training
Documentation and Reporting:
Provide detailed reports documenting current workflows, identified inefficiencies, and recommended improvements
Produce briefing slides, metric charts, progress reviews, program schedules, technical reports, and organizational charts
Deliver monthly compliance monitoring reports via designated Microsoft Applications and upload to SPIDR
Requirements
Requirements/Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., Healthcare Administration, Statistics, or related scientific field)
6+ years of experience applying improvement methodologies and leading projects, ideally in a relevant industry
Strong understanding of improvement methodologies (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma, PDSA/PDCA, Change Management)
Proficiency in data analysis (statistical software), problem-solving, and root cause analysis
Excellent communication (written and verbal), facilitation, and training skills
Project management skills
Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams
Active Secret security clearance required
Proficiency in Microsoft Teams, MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Project, Access), Power BI, and Adobe Acrobat
Preferred Skills
Master's degree in Healthcare Administration, Statistics, Business Administration, or related field
Lean Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification
Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
Other relevant certifications in quality improvement or healthcare administration
Experience with Navy Medicine, military health system, or federal healthcare operations
Working knowledge of Navy and Marine Corps operational environments
Experience with Get Real Get Better (GRGB) methodologies
Familiarity with American Society of Quality (ASQ) standards and guidelines
Experience with SPIDR or similar performance improvement tracking systems
Experience in healthcare industry continuous process improvement
Background Requirements
Physical Requirements:
Work may involve sitting or standing for extended periods of time. Position may require typing and reading from a computer screen. Must have sufficient mobility, including but not limited to bending, reaching, and kneeling to complete daily duties in a timely and efficient manner. May include lifting weight up to 30 pounds as necessary.
