Summary

DevOps Engineer to support the development and operation of advanced software used for the design, monitoring, and analysis of the Natrium advanced reactor. Reporting to the Manager of Engineering Analysis Automation Software (EAAS), this role will provide technical leadership across software development, platform architecture, scientific computing, DevOps, CI/CD, and workflow automation.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software engineering and DevOps, with experience supporting complex engineering or scientific software in a regulated environment. This position requires a hands-on technical leader who can drive architecture decisions, improve software reliability and maintainability, automate engineering workflows, and mentor technical contributors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical ownership and leadership by influencing software architecture and development approaches that support long-term reliability, scalability, maintainability, and sustainability.
  • Design, develop, refactor, and implement software features with a strong focus on code clarity, performance, maintainability, and quality.
  • Establish and maintain consistent architecture, configuration management, testing, documentation, and development practices that meet regulated-environment requirements.
  • Design, implement, maintain, and improve multi-repository CI/CD pipelines and automated testing strategies.
  • Develop and maintain containerized workflows that provide consistent, reproducible, traceable, and reliable development and deployment environments.
  • Own and continuously improve recurring software release processes by reducing manual steps, streamlining workflows, improving regression testing infrastructure, and coordinating effectively across teams.
  • Collaborate with IT, engineering analysts, software developers, and other technical stakeholders to deliver robust tools and automated workflows.
  • Ensure software development and DevOps practices align with Software Quality Assurance (SQA) requirements.
  • Support scientific software that schedules and manages HPC workloads, including environments using SLURM.
  • Provide onboarding, mentoring, and hands-on technical leadership across a complex scientific software ecosystem.
  • Promote modern software engineering, DevOps, automation, testing, and development practices.
  • Identify and reduce technical debt by promoting maintainable design patterns, modernization opportunities, and consistent development standards.
  • Support multiple teams, shared platforms, frameworks, toolchains, services, and multi-repository environments.
  • Take ownership of additional systems, services, and workflows as the EAAS technical scope evolves.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of professional software development experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Nuclear Engineering, Physics, or a related technical discipline, or an advanced degree with equivalent professional experience.
  • Strong experience with DevOps, CI/CD, automated testing, and modern software development practices.
  • Experience developing scientific or engineering software that schedules High-Performance Computing (HPC) workloads, preferably using SLURM.
  • Strong proficiency with Python.
  • Strong experience with Git and modern Git-based development workflows.
  • Hands-on experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and/or Apptainer.
  • Experience developing and maintaining software in SQA-regulated environments, such as NQA-1 or similar regulated quality frameworks.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and guide teams through complex technical processes.
  • Ability to work effectively with engineering, scientific, IT, software development, and cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting nuclear, scientific, engineering, or industrial software systems.
  • Experience working with reactor analysis workflows, modeling tools, numerical methods, or scientific computing.
  • Experience developing automated documentation workflows.
  • Experience supporting shared platforms, frameworks, toolchains, and multi-team engineering environments.
  • Experience with compiled programming languages such as:
    • Fortran
    • C
    • C++
    • Rust
  • Experience with multi-repository software architectures and enterprise-scale development environments.
  • Experience improving release automation, regression testing, and software quality processes.
  • Experience working in regulated engineering, nuclear, aerospace, defense, or other safety-critical environments.
