Director of Enterprise Applications - Freight Operations

Currently we are searching for a Director of Enterprise Applications – Freight Operations to fulfill an immediate full-time vacancy.

This position is a Full-Time, Direct Hire position that sits fully onsite in the Southeast U.S.

Day to day responsibilities

• Own the strategy, stability, and continuous improvement of the freight operations application environment — spanning transportation management systems (TMS), EDI integrations, legacy RPG-based platforms, and freight billing and load-tracking systems.
• Lead, coach, and scale a team of roughly 15 application professionals across two direct reports, while also overseeing a significant contracted development practice supporting day-to-day operations.
• Translate complex freight operations requirements from business leaders into actionable technology roadmaps — driving timely, high-quality delivery without writing code yourself.
• Partner closely with a peer Applications Director whose environment intersects with yours, ensuring seamless data flow and integration across the broader enterprise application landscape.
• Govern the application lifecycle: manage change requests, oversee system upgrades and integrations, maintain SOX/SOC compliance controls, and ensure data integrity for operational reporting.
• Identify and champion opportunities to modernize the freight tech stack, including leveraging AI, predictive analytics, and modern integration platforms to drive operational efficiency.

Position requirements

• Deep familiarity with how freight moves — LTL operations experience is strongly preferred; candidates who have spent time in or around transportation operations and understand freight workflows from the ground up will stand out most.
• 5+ years in enterprise application management with at least 2–3 years in a director or senior leadership role overseeing multi-system environments and cross-functional teams.
• Hands-on experience with Transportation Management Systems (TMS) — familiarity with platforms similar to McLeod Software is a strong advantage.
• Working knowledge of EDI environments and their role in freight data exchange; exposure to RPG-based systems is a plus but not required.
• Proven ability to build trust and execute — this role demands equal parts technology acumen and relationship management; the ideal candidate is as comfortable in a room with operations executives as in an application review meeting.
• Bachelor''s degree in a relevant field required; advanced degree a plus. Background in information systems, business, or a related discipline all considered.
• Nice-to-have: experience with hybrid cloud/API integration platforms, data governance practices, or SOX/SOC IT controls in an enterprise setting.
