The Department of Radiology at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an (On-site) Computational Physicist/Simulation Engineer.

About the Opportunity

The Center for Advanced Imaging (CAI) in the WVU Department of Radiology is seeking a Computational Physicist/Simulation Engineer to support development of world-class biomedical imaging software and further the research agenda of CAI. The role will center around designing, developing, testing, packaging, deploying, and maintaining software and associated data. Python scripting will be the main technical focus, but experience with GEANT4 or other simulation packages is also highly beneficial.

What You'll Do

Scripting and Development

Maintain current software tools used in the current already developed imager

Assure software upgrades and modifications for the current software, when necessary, through personal effort and/or outsourcing

Review the (research, medical) software needs and level of implementation for all developed system

Perform definition of user software needs for new planned system

Develop system specific spec lists and methods of implementation

Test plan definition and implementation for performance and usability

Perform usability studie

Perform Database, User Interface and middleware development

Provide system documentation for users/partners (other researchers, technologists, clinicians, partnering industrial engineers)

Provide training for users: researchers, technologists and doctor

Collaborate closely with in-house personnel and outside partners developing data acquisition system and motion control development and provide feedback to data acquisition system development

Engineer critical infrastructure components to support image and patient data storage and retrieval, user interface and middleware on dedicated medical imagers developed in the CAI nuclear medicine imaging instrumentation program

Technology Transfer

Maintain lab notebook and development journals to document Intellectual Property development

Coordinate interaction with the WVU technology transfer office and outside industrial partner

Manage transfer of software from the laboratory environment to pre-commercial and commercial prototype

Complete disclosures and patent applications, whenever applicable

Skills and Service

Work on skill improvements via professional development and continued education

Attend research-relevant conference

Present papers on software engineering project

Work with students and lead/supervise their software related projects or task

Evaluate new software and hardware technologies for applicability in imaging systems developed

by the lab.

Manage external communications for example via blog/podcast/wiki/Facebook/university web site

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience in the following:
    • Programming with C++ and Python scripting.
  • Any equivalent combination of related education, certifications, and/or experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Programming

  • User Interface design and implementation
  • Usability testing

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Exposure to, or hands-on experience with, computer physics simulation packages (e.g., GEANT4, MCNP, GATE).
  • An understanding of, or an interest in, the physics concepts of nuclear medicine imaging (PET/SPECT, radiation detection, instrumentation).
  • Experience developing data acquisition (DAQ) software or interfacing code with hardware for medical imaging applications.
  • System administration experience (specifically managing scientific computing environments).
