Sr. Java & Elasticsearch Application Engineer

Mindbank Consulting Group is seeking a Senior Java & Elasticsearch Application Engineer to support the assessment, documentation, and continued evolution of a complex, geospatially enabled data platform used to monitor and analyze field data-collection activities.

Location:                     Remote within the United States; must be located in Eastern or Central time zone.

Employment Type:      W-2 salaried or W-2 hourly only. No C2C or 1099 arrangements.

Compensation:           $135,000–$150,000 annually, based on relevant experience.

Work Authorization:    U.S. Citizenship or U.S. Permanent Residency () only.

Duration:                     Six months with possible option to extend.

The platform captures GPS and operational data from field personnel, processes and analyzes those data to identify patterns and potential data-quality concerns, and presents results through an interactive, map-based web application. The technology environment includes Java and Spring-based APIs, Elasticsearch, Vue.js, geospatial APIs, a Windows-based .NET GPS client, GitLab, and CI/CD pipelines.

This is an interesting opportunity for an experienced engineer who enjoys understanding complex systems, working through technical ambiguity, and translating existing code and institutional knowledge into clear, usable technical documentation.

Responsibilities:

• Review and analyze application source code, project structure, existing technical documentation, and system components to develop a comprehensive understanding of the platform.
• Reverse-engineer and document the application’s data model and data flows using the Elasticsearch data store and existing system resources.
• Reconstruct and validate the development environment to support ongoing maintenance and future enhancements.
• Analyze the relationships among the platform’s Java/Spring APIs, web application, data and search layers, geospatial services, and Windows-based GPS client.
• Develop, update, and organize technical documentation, including system architecture, application components, data flows, dependencies, and development processes.
• Provide technical support for application enhancements and ongoing platform maintenance.
• Work closely with internal technology teams to share knowledge and support the transition of long-term platform ownership.
• Assist with training and knowledge transfer for technical staff who will maintain and enhance the application.

Required Qualifications:

• U.S. Citizen or U.S. Permanent Resident
• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology, or a related field
• At  least 10 years of relevant experience; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
• Deep, hands-on experience developing and supporting Java applications and Spring-based APIs.
• Demonstrated expertise with Elasticsearch, including the ability to analyze data structures, understand data relationships, and investigate complex application data.
• Proven ability to understand, troubleshoot, and document complex, multi-component technology environments.
• Experience analyzing existing code and technical artifacts to understand systems with limited or outdated documentation.
• Strong technical problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
• Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with technical stakeholders and internal development teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with Kibana for data exploration, analysis, troubleshooting, or operational monitoring.
• Experience using GitLab and supporting CI/CD pipelines.
• Experience with Vue.js or other modern JavaScript frameworks.
• Familiarity with geospatial technologies, GPS data, mapping applications, or location-based analytics.
• Experience with Leaflet or other web mapping libraries.
• Familiarity with .NET applications or Windows-based client software.
• Experience supporting application modernization, technical discovery, system transition, or knowledge-transfer initiatives.
