Project DescriptionThis role supports a high-visibility healthcare payer initiative focused on EDI attachment processing and claims interoperability. The team is responsible for building and enhancing mission-critical EDI pipelines that support HIPAA-compliant transactions, with a strong emphasis on X12 275 attachments linked to 837 claims.
The engineer will work on a modern .NET platform that processes high-volume, high-reliability EDI transactions used by providers, clearinghouses, and government programs (CMS/Medicare). This project directly impacts claims accuracy, turnaround time, regulatory compliance, and provider experience.
Project Initiatives & Impact- Modernizing and stabilizing EDI attachment processing engines supporting X12 275 transactions
- Improving claims-to-attachment reconciliation (837 ? 275) to reduce payer rework and delays
- Ensuring HIPAA transaction and code set compliance across multiple payer companion guides
- Enhancing binary document handling (PDF, TIFF, JPEG) within EDI workflows
- Strengthening logging, error handling, and resiliency in high-reliability healthcare systems
- Supporting payer integrations with CMS/Medicare and commercial payers to meet regulatory and operational requirements
Required Technical Skills & Experience.NET Development (Required)- 5+ years of production .NET development (C#, .NET 6+ preferred)
- Hands-on experience building and maintaining EDI processing pipelines/engines in .NET
- Strong experience with:
- File I/O, streaming, and binary data handling
- Batch processing and service-oriented architectures
- Strong practices around:
- Unit testing
- Logging
- Error handling in high-reliability systems
- Development using VS Code (standard IDE)
X12 EDI & HIPAA (Required)- Hands-on experience with X12 EDI transaction sets, including:
- 275 - Additional Information to Support a Health Care Claim (primary focus)
- 837 - Health Care Claim (Professional / Institutional), including 275 linkage
- 277 - Health Care Claim Status Response
- 999 - Implementation Acknowledgement
- 824 - Application Advice
- Deep understanding of EDI envelope structure (ISA / GS / ST)
- Control number generation, matching, and reconciliation
- Experience implementing HIPAA transaction and code set compliance
- Familiarity with syntax rules, separators, and repetition standards
Binary Document & Attachment Handling (Required)- Experience with MIME encoding/decoding within EDI transactions
- Strong knowledge of Base64 encoding/decoding for embedded payloads (PDF, TIFF, JPEG)
- Understanding of:
- Payer-specific attachment size limits
- Chunking strategies
- Knowledge of BIN/BDS segment usage
Payer Companion Guide Experience (Required)- Candidates must have implemented at least two payer companion guides
- Highly relevant experience includes:
- CMS / Medicare (required baseline)
- UnitedHealthcare (UHC)
- Anthem / Elevance Health
- Highmark
- State Medicaid programs
Additional Skills & Qualifications (Preferred)- Experience with healthcare payer platforms such as HealthEdge (HealthRules Payor)
- Clearinghouse integrations (e.g., Availity)

Industry Experience- Payer-side healthcare EDI experience is required

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $70.00 - $90.00/hr.
