Position Summary

The UNM IT Service Desk is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented IT Project Manager Intern to support the planning, coordination, and execution of technology-related projects. The intern will work closely with IT project managers, developers, system administrators, business stakeholders, vendors, and other technical teams to help ensure projects are delivered on time and meet business requirements.

This position provides hands-on experience in IT project management, including project planning, scheduling, documentation, risk tracking, stakeholder communication, and implementation support.

Key Job Duties

Assist IT project managers with planning and coordinating technology projects from initiation through completion.

Maintain project plans, schedules, timelines, task assignments, and project documentation.

Track project milestones, deliverables, dependencies, and deadlines.

Coordinate project meetings, prepare agendas, document meeting notes, and track action items.

Communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to collect project updates and requirements.

Follow up with team members regarding outstanding tasks, deliverables, and deadlines.

Assist with tracking project risks, issues, dependencies, and change requests.

Escalate potential delays, technical issues, or project risks to the appropriate project manager.

Assist in coordinating software implementations, system upgrades, infrastructure projects, application deployments, and other IT initiatives.

Help document business and technical requirements, project processes, workflows, and implementation plans.

Assist with user acceptance testing (UAT), testing schedules, defect tracking, and implementation activities.

Maintain project status reports and dashboards and help prepare updates for leadership and stakeholders.

Assist with coordinating activities between IT, business units, vendors, consultants, and other project stakeholders.

Help monitor project budgets, invoices, resource assignments, and other project-related information.

Maintain organized project files and documentation in accordance with company standards.

Assist with project closeout activities, including documenting lessons learned and final deliverables.

Support continuous improvement initiatives related to IT project management processes and tools.

Perform other IT project management and administrative duties as assigned.

Act as a backup for UNM IT Service Desk operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled in a degree seeking program at UNM, Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.

Preferred Qualifications

Qualifications:

Currently pursuing a degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Business, Project Management, or a related field.

Strong interest in technology and IT project management.

Excellent organizational and time-management skills.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical audiences.

Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.

Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Google Workspace, particularly Excel/Sheets, Word/Docs, PowerPoint/Slides, and Outlook/Calendar.

Familiarity with project management or collaboration tools such as Jira, Azure DevOps, ServiceNow, Asana, Monday.com, Trello, or Microsoft Project is a plus.

Basic understanding of software development, IT infrastructure, cybersecurity, databases, cloud technologies, or enterprise applications is a plus.

Previous experience with academic, personal, volunteer, or professional technology projects is preferred but not required.
