This role will focus on designing, building, and maintaining scalable API solutions, with a strong emphasis on MuleSoft development. This position is responsible for modernizing and scaling data exchange capabilities by building secure, high-performing APIs and integration frameworks that enable seamless data flow between internal systems, provider networks, partners, and regulatory entities.

Reporting to the Manager of EDI Data Exchange, this individual will serve as a technical leader in bridging traditional EDI transactions (e.g., X12, HL7) with modern API-driven architectures. The Senior Integration Engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including application development, infrastructure, data engineering, and external vendors—to deliver scalable, compliant, and reliable integration solutions that support healthcare operations, claims processing, member services, and provider data exchange.

This role requires a strong blend of hands-on API development expertise, healthcare data exchange knowledge, and the ability to lead integration initiatives in a highly regulated environment.

Technical Expertise

  • Strong experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and microservices architectures
  • Proficiency in modern programming languages such as Java, Python, or Node.js
  • Hands-on experience with API gateways (e.g., Apigee, Mulesoft, Azure API Management)
  • Experience with integration platforms / middleware (e.g., MuleSoft, Boomi, IBM Integration Bus)
  • Solid understanding of data formats and protocols including JSON, XML, SOAP, and REST
  • Experience working with cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud Platform) and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes)
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and version control (Git)

EDI & Healthcare Data Exchange

  • Strong knowledge of EDI transactions (X12 270/271, 834, 835, 837, etc.)
  • Experience integrating EDI systems with modern APIs
  • Familiarity with HL7/FHIR standards and healthcare interoperability frameworks
  • Understanding of payer-provider data exchange workflows, claims processing, and eligibility systems
  • Knowledge of HIPAA compliance, data privacy, and security requirements

Architecture & Integration Design

  • Experience designing end-to-end integration solutions across hybrid environments
  • Ability to translate business requirements into scalable integration architecture and API designs
  • Knowledge of event-driven architecture, message queues, and streaming (Kafka, MQ, etc.)
  • Strong problem-solving skills in debugging and optimizing integration performance

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Ability to work cross-functionally with EDI teams, developers, vendors, and business stakeholders
  • Experience leading or mentoring junior engineers and guiding technical decision-making
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to operate effectively in a matrixed, regulated healthcare environment

Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and implement API-led integration solutions using MuleSoft
Build and maintain scalable, secure, and high-performing APIs across enterprise systems
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements and deliver integration solutions
Support end-to-end integration lifecycle including development, testing, deployment, and maintenance
Troubleshoot and resolve integration and performance issues in production environments

Required Qualifications
5–10 years of experience in MuleSoft development
5+ years of  experience in API design, development, and integration architecture
3 years of proven ability to deliver enterprise-level integration solutions
3 years of experience with other API platforms/tools (Kong is a plus)
5+ years of overall application development experience (full-stack preferred)
