**Core Qualifications:**
- Minimum 5 years'' recent experience developing enterprise applications using COBOL on IBM mainframe systems (z/OS).
- Solid background in JCL scripting, and strong hands-on experience with VSAM file structures.
- Working knowledge of mainframe databases such as DB2, including programmatic access and basic administration.
- Experience in online transaction management using IMS/DC or CICS transaction servers.
- Familiarity with large-scale system upgrades, refactoring, or mainframe rehosting efforts.
**Technical Expertise:**
- In-depth understanding of COBOL, JCL, and CICS for both batch and online application development.
- Proficient with TSO/ISPF, IBM utility tools, and debugging with Abend-AID or equivalent dump analysis tools.
- Experience with scheduling and automation using Control-M or Control-D.
- Ability to use tools such as File-AID for data analysis and manipulation.
- Practical experience with mainframe security tools, ideally RACF.
- Awareness of contemporary technologies like AI-based code analysis or refactoring platforms (e.g., IBM WatsonX, GitHub Copilot).
- Exposure to methodologies for risk evaluation and capacity/resource planning in migration projects.
**Professional Skills:**
- Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills, with a proven ability to diagnose and resolve complex issues.
- Strong communication skills to interact with cross-functional teams, including application modernization squads and middleware experts.
- Capable of mentoring junior developers and contributing to documentation best practices.
- Independent, detail-oriented, and adept at multitasking within composed, agile teams.
**Desirable Enhancements:**
- Knowledge of integration with distributed environments (e.g., Java-based web services accessing mainframe data).
- Prior use of CI/CD pipelines in mainframe contexts, with tools such as Jenkins or GitHub Actions.
- Background in ServiceNow or similar ITSM platforms.
- Experience with system performance measurement tools and tuning mainframe applications for scalability.
