Software Engineer (Java/Scala/Akka)

Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer to design, develop, and maintain platform notification services that enable customers to receive critical alerts for efficient operation of engines and machines. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in Java, Scala, and Akka technologies, along with experience building scalable, high-availability distributed systems.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain scalable backend services using Java, Scala, and Akka.
• Build and enhance event-driven notification platforms and microservices.
• Develop RESTful APIs using Spring Boot.
• Work on complex application development, troubleshooting, and system integration activities.
• Design and implement high-availability and reliable software solutions.
• Participate in architecture discussions and contribute to technical design decisions.
• Develop, deploy, and maintain applications in AWS cloud environments.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins and Azure DevOps.
• Perform integration testing and support customer acceptance testing.
• Mentor junior engineers and provide technical leadership within the team.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams in an Agile/Scrum environment.
• Maintain high coding standards, documentation, and software quality practices.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree with 10+ years of experience OR Master’s degree with 8+ years of experience.
• 5+ years of hands-on software development experience using Java 8+.
• 2+ years of professional Scala programming experience.
• 2+ years of experience with Akka technologies including:
  • Akka Streams
  • Akka Actors
  • Akka HTTP
  • Akka Persistence
• Strong understanding of Computer Science fundamentals including data structures and algorithms.
• Experience building scalable distributed systems and microservices.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience designing and developing Spring Boot REST APIs.
• Experience with architectural patterns such as:
  • MVC
  • Microservices
  • Event-driven architecture
• Hands-on experience with AWS services including:
  • API Gateway
  • Lambda
  • Fargate
  • S3
  • CloudWatch
  • IAM
  • CloudFormation
  • ALB/NLB
• Experience with relational and NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL and DynamoDB.
• Experience with CI/CD tools such as Jenkins and Azure DevOps.
• Experience working within Agile/Scrum teams.
• Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.

Work Environment

• Preference for candidates located near Chicago for occasional onsite collaboration.
