Job description
We are seeking an Onsite Design Engineer to support joint development activities for primary and secondary flight control systems in the civil aerospace industry.
In this customer-facing role, you will work closely with Boeing and internal engineering teams to support the design, development, testing, and introduction of mechanical actuation products. You will serve as a technical design resource at the customer site, helping translate customer needs and engineering requirements into practical, manufacturable design solutions.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience designing mechanical components and systems, preferably rotary and linear actuation products, and is comfortable working directly with customers and engineering teams. A strong working knowledge of Siemens NX and Boeing-preferred CAD/design practices is highly desirable.
Customer & Technical Support
Provide onsite mechanical design and engineering support to Boeing engineering teams.
Serve as a technical point of contact for design-related customer requests and discussions.
Work directly with customer engineers to understand design requirements, constraints, and technical objectives.
Translate customer needs and engineering requirements into practical design concepts and solutions.
Communicate design decisions, technical issues, risks, and recommendations to internal engineering teams.
Build effective working relationships with Boeing engineering and program teams.
Identify information gaps and ask thoughtful questions to clarify requirements, assumptions, and design intent.
Support technical decision-making by providing sound engineering analysis and design recommendations.
Mechanical Design & Development
Design and develop mechanical components and assemblies for flight control actuation systems.
Support the design and development of rotary and linear actuators and associated mechanical components.
Develop concepts and layouts through preliminary and detailed design.
Create and modify 3D models, assemblies, layouts, and engineering drawings.
Perform design trade studies and support evaluation of alternative design concepts.
Apply sound mechanical engineering principles to develop robust and manufacturable aerospace designs.
Support tolerance, fit, interface, and packaging evaluations.
Participate in design reviews and incorporate customer and engineering feedback.
Support products throughout the development lifecycle from concept through testing, qualification, production, and entry into service.
Support design changes, problem resolution, and continuous product improvement.
But what else? (advantages, specificities, etc.)
CAD & Engineering Tools
Use Siemens NX or equivalent 3D CAD tools to develop and maintain mechanical designs.
Apply Boeing-preferred CAD practices, modeling standards, drawing practices, and engineering processes.
Interpret and develop engineering drawings, layouts, schematics, and other technical documentation.
Support configuration-controlled product definition and engineering documentation.
Collaborate with engineering teams using PLM/PDM and other engineering systems.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with systems, test, manufacturing, quality, program, stress, and other engineering functions.
Collaborate with manufacturing and suppliers to ensure designs are practical and producible.
Support prototype builds, testing, qualification activities, and design verification.
Participate in root-cause investigations and corrective-action activities related to mechanical design issues.
Coordinate with offsite engineering teams to resolve technical issues and meet customer requirements.
Collaborate across Actuation System business units to identify opportunities for new products and business.
Candidate skills & requirements
Required Experience & Skills
Professional experience designing mechanical components or systems, preferably in aerospace.
Experience developing products from concept through detailed design, testing, and production.
Hands-on experience with 3D CAD, preferably Siemens NX.
Strong understanding of mechanical design fundamentals, including interfaces, tolerances, materials, mechanisms, and manufacturability.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, layouts, schematics, and technical specifications.
Strong problem-solving, critical-thinking, and analytical skills.
Ability to work effectively with engineers and cross-functional teams.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively with limited supervision.
Ability to work effectively in a customer-facing, onsite environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience working with Boeing or supporting Boeing engineering organizations.
Familiarity with Boeing CAD tools, modeling standards, drawing practices, and engineering processes.
Experience with Siemens NX in an aerospace product-development environment.
Experience designing or applying rotary and linear actuation products.
Experience with civil aerospace flight control systems.
Experience with aerospace mechanical design and qualification processes.
Familiarity with RTCA/DO-160 and other applicable aerospace standards.
Experience supporting customer engineering teams in an onsite or highly customer-facing role.
Experience with requirements development and engineering documentation.
Experience supporting root-cause and corrective-action investigations.
What Will Make You Successful
You will be successful in this role if you enjoy solving challenging mechanical design problems and working directly with customers and engineering teams.
You should be comfortable taking an engineering requirement or customer need and turning it into a practical design solution. You are expected to bring strong CAD and mechanical design skills while also communicating effectively with engineers, program teams, manufacturing, and customer stakeholders.
Because this is an onsite customer-facing position, you should be comfortable working independently, building relationships with Boeing engineers, asking the right questions, and representing the company's engineering capabilities professionally.
