Summary

The role of a Discipline Manager is to oversee a group of employees within a discipline. This role is essential for developing technical abilities within the group. The Discipline Manager is the primary representative of the group's technical services both internally and externally to clients. The Discipline Manager is also responsible for coordinating the discipline group's resources related to projects, training, and quality control. Consistently lead and support Salas O'Brien's Core Values and Policies.

Resource Reporting and Management
  • The Discipline Manager reports to a Director.
  • The Discipline Manager will lead a team of technical engineering resources. This will include conducting annual and mid-year reviews of direct reports and provide information to the Director relative to performance, pay raises and bonuses.
  • Develop and manage a strong program for personnel development within the discipline group
  • Coordinate and oversee the mentoring/training of the group's employees to allow the group's employees to grow and be effective contributors on projects, while developing bench strength for all critical services
  • Provide regular timely verbal recognition and/or constructive feedback
  • Approve time sheets and expense reports of all direct reports
  • Assist with succession planning and ensure a plan is in place for business continuity related to the Discipline Manager role
  • Assist with hiring, termination, promotion, and transfer of group personnel
  • Assist with the development of job descriptions for hiring needs
  • Identify staff needs and potential candidates while working with HR
  • Lead potential employee interviews and provide input to the Director related to new hires
  • Lead and manage successful new employee "on-boarding" and mentorship in accordance with Salas O'Brien and the firm's policy
  • Work with PM's to support their project needs
  • Facilitate cohesive operations both within the group and across Salas O'Brien
  • Continually manage the workload of the group assigning staff to projects with regard to skills, project needs, and existing workload
  • Accountable to keep staff utilized. Will at a minimum review the project assignments of the group's staff, and the availability of the staff on a weekly basis
  • Support and enforce Salas O'Brien's Safety standards

Business Planning and Development
  • Assist Salas O'Brein's primary client contacts by representing and promoting the group's capabilities and successes
  • Build and maintain successful relationships with clients as an expert
  • Identify and understand client's needs and goals as related to the group; evaluate current capacities and new technologies; and then plan and develop competencies to meet these needs and goals
  • Support Bid activities and develop execution plans for projects
  • Develop and approve project scopes and estimates developed by the group supporting the proposal efforts of the Project Managers. Work with the Project Manager and other groups as necessary to finalize proposals
  • Understand commercial terms and technical specs of all projects the group is supporting

Technical Duties & Responsibilities

The successful candidate must be highly motivated, capable of working with a team or in a self-directed manner and must be familiar with the full engineering cycle including, but not limited to the following:
  • Process engineering design from concept through to completion
  • Participates in the development of proposals and design packages for process technologies, which includes establishing process design basis, development of process options, and optimization of selected design.
  • Performs detailed process design calculations and develops process design simulations.
  • Participate in project kick-off meetings, PFD/P&ID reviews, and other client-facing meetings.
  • Maintains effective communication with project team members, client contacts, and firm leadership.
  • Experience performing pressure relief device sizing and pressure reliving system evaluations
  • Experience selecting and specifying process instrumentation
  • Experience performing hydraulic evaluation
  • Experience with OSHA requirements such as Process Safety Management
  • Experience conducting process hazard analysis
  • Participate in startup and commissioning activities.
  • Develop work flow and QC standards related to the services provided by the group to improve efficiency and quality as part of Salas O'Brein's quality policy
  • Perform quality audit prior to submittal of any deliverable. Support and enforce Salas O'Brien's QC standards
  • Serve as the technical expert and leader of the staff within the group

Education & Experience
  • BS in Chemical Engineering required
  • A professional engineering license in Chemical Engineering is preferred.
  • 10 to 20 years relevant experience in process engineering (process designs, FEED, field work).
  • Solid knowledge of Chemical Engineering disciplines, process design tools and procedures
  • Operational experience is a plus.
  • Experience in Process Simulation Software such as AspenOne Software Suite
  • Ability to perform under pressure and work multiple projects concurrently
  • As a process engineering Discipline Manager, you will be expected to demonstrate a high standard of ethics, professionalism, client focus, customer service, ownership and accountability.
  • The successful candidate must have computer skills, strong presentation skills and be an effective written and verbal communicator.
  • This role requires an effective delegator and an individual that can be delegated to while working in a collaborative environment with multiple team members.
  • Short-term domestic travel possible.

Work Environment/Job Conditions

This job is performed both in the office and in the field. Field work requires experience and confidence working in and around heavy industrial equipment, systems and conditions is required. Activities and responsibilities require frequent sitting (often working on a computer), frequent driving, flying, walking, standing, light lifting, bending, and reaching. Due to tool and computer usage, there may be repetitive motions of the hands and wrists.
