Job Summary

Provides expert design services to research and/or support staff by giving direction to the design process from conceptualization through production stage.

Responsibilities

  • Assists research staff in the conceptual and developmental design of equipment or systems for use in connection with Battelle projects.
  • Acts as a consultant to Battelle staff on the development and fabrication or design of complex equipment or systems.
  • Assists research staff in estimating the hours required developing a design and the costs of purchases and fabrication.
  • Analyzes engineering proposals and related data to assist in determining the feasibility of proposed designs, able to identify potential prototype fabrication and manufacturing problems.
  • Assists research staff in the investigation, procurement of data and calculations required to develop a design.
  • Develops final design in conjunction with design originator.
  • Directs, and contributes to the preparation of final detail, layout and assembly drawings and geometric visualization.
  • Reviews and approves engineering drawings and related documents to assure conformance to design/drafting standards, design specifications, and configuration management principles.
  • Maintains an awareness of, and works in accordance with, the appropriate Quality System (e.g. ISO 9001), and identifies improvements for this system.
  • Evaluates and selects materials and components for purchase interacting with vendors and arranging for purchases.
  • Participates in meetings with clients on a regular basis and contributes to proposals or reports as requested.
  • May have responsibility for the direction of up to 10 staff including other designers, technicians and other personnel. This would include mentoring/career growth, assisting these staff with finding work across the institute and supporting Management with performance evaluations and discussions.
  • Assist in directing the fabrication, assembly, and testing of hardware, direct the detailing of design work, or coordinate design work on multiple projects.
  • Provides written input, analyses and graphics to contribute to project reports and proposals.
  • Maintains currency regarding technological developments in the design field including CAD, configuration management tools, spreadsheets and components. Utilizes this information to evaluate and recommend equipment and software for design activities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an engineering field; 10+ years of experience in performing design of increasing complexity with minimal direction; or an equivalent combination of education and or experience in a related field.
  • Demonstrated, hands on experience authoring, releasing, and validating Government Technical Data Packages (TDPs) for customer delivery
  • Proven working knowledge and application of:
    • ASME Y14.100 2017 - Engineering Drawing Practices
    • MIL STD 31000 - Technical Data Packages
  • Experience developing contract ready, configuration controlled design artifacts suitable for manufacturing, test, and lifecycle sustainment
  • Must have extensive experience in conceptualizing design requirements, transforming requirements into a feasible design, and participating in or supervising actual production of the hardware.
  • Must be able to anticipate and resolve design problems, as well as provide specific technical guidance to junior designers and research staff.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with advances in and availability of materials and components that may be incorporated in the design.
  • 5+ years of design experience utilizing Creo (6) or Solidworks (2020)
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment, as well as individually
  • Experience working within Windchill PLM software
  • with the ability to obtain and maintain a government security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Current TS Clearance
  • Experience with TDP Type I, II, and/or III definitions and application
  • Working knowledge of:
    • ASME Y14.5 (GD&T)
    • ASME Y14.35 / Y14.24 (Revision and Drawing Types)
    • ASME Y14.41 (Model Based Definition) and digital TDPs
  • Experience supporting manufacturing readiness, first article inspection, qualification, or depot level sustainment
  • Familiarity with data rights, export controlled technical data (ITAR/EAR), and marking requirements
  • CAD experience with sheet metal, cables and cable routing
  • Design experience with electrical boxes and electrical schematics
  • Experience in documenting weld specifications
