Position Overview
Walmart is seeking an experienced Senior Java Engineer to support a global technology initiative focused on the production of support, modernization, integration, and decommissioning of systems across Walmart's international operations.
This team is working through Walmart's international technology footprint country by country, supporting systems associated with businesses and markets that fall under Walmart's global purview and divestiture efforts.
This is not a traditional Java development role. While strong hands-on engineering capabilities are required, experience operating effectively across global teams is one of the biggest indicators of success. Candidates who have worked extensively with China-based engineering, technology, or business teams will be especially relevant.
The ideal candidate combines a modern Java/microservices background with the ability to understand legacy enterprise applications, production dependencies, APIs, integrations, and the operational considerations involved in safely decommissioning systems.
What You'll Do
- Develop and support enterprise applications using Java 21, Spring, and Spring Boot.
- Build, maintain, troubleshoot, and support microservices-based applications.
- Participate in production support for applications supporting Walmart's international technology environment.
- Support the decommissioning of legacy applications and services as Walmart works through international markets on a country-by-country basis.
- Partner with globally distributed engineering and business teams, with significant emphasis on collaboration across different countries and time zones.
- Work closely with teams and systems associated with China operations and integrations.
- Analyze application dependencies, integrations, APIs, services, and downstream impacts before systems are transitioned or decommissioned.
- Support integrations between legacy platforms, modern services, ServiceNow, and eCommerce APIs.
- Troubleshoot complex issues spanning modern microservices and legacy retail systems.
- Help maintain stability and continuity throughout production support, transition, and system-retirement activities.
Core Technical Skills
Candidates should have strong experience across as much of the following stack as possible:
- Java 21
- Spring / Spring Boot
- Microservices
- Kubernetes
- Kafka
- Cassandra
- GitHub Copilot / Copilot-assisted development
Candidates do not necessarily need every technology listed, but the broader the alignment across this stack, the stronger the fit.
Global Experience
This is a major component of the role.
Strong candidates should demonstrate:
- Experience working within large, globally distributed technology organizations
- Direct collaboration with international engineering and business teams
- Experience coordinating technical work across countries and time zones
- Ability to navigate dependencies between global and regional technology teams
- Experience working directly with teams in China is highly preferred and will be a major interview consideration
- Strong written and verbal communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders
Legacy / Retail Systems Knowledge
Experience with Walmart or similar large-scale retail environments is highly valuable. Knowledge of any of the following systems or functional areas would be particularly relevant:
- Merchandising systems
- Modular
- Supplier Processing
- GPI
- Pricing
- Linksave
- OLIF
- Item Link
- Vendor Master
- PETE Services for Global Pricing
- Ethics and Compliance systems
- Global ServiceNow
- China ServiceNow integrations
- eCommerce API integrations, including eCongo
- GIR
- IEC
Candidates are not expected to have experience with every legacy platform listed above. Exposure to several of these areas, or closely related retail merchandising, pricing, supplier, item, vendor, or global commerce systems, would be a strong advantage.
Ideal Candidate Profile
The strongest candidate will bring a combination of:
- Global delivery experience, particularly working directly with teams in China.
- Strong Java / Spring Boot / microservices engineering experience.
- Experience supporting large-scale production environments.
- Understanding of legacy application dependencies, integrations, and system decommissioning.
- Experience with Kafka, Kubernetes, and Cassandra.
- Exposure to enterprise retail, merchandising, pricing, supplier, item, or eCommerce platforms.
- Ability to work in an environment where modern services and legacy enterprise systems coexist.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to coordinate technical work across geographically distributed teams.
