The Linux Systems Engineer Vulnerability Remediation is a hands-on engineering role focused on identifying, investigating, validating, and remediating vulnerabilities across enterprise Linux environments. The ideal candidate will have strong Linux administration expertise, experience working independently within production environments, and the ability to coordinate remediation activities with application owners, infrastructure teams, and business stakeholders when downtime or change management processes are required.
Position Overview:
This position is responsible for supporting enterprise vulnerability remediation initiatives across Linux server environments. The engineer will leverage vulnerability management data to assess system exposure, determine vulnerability applicability, perform remediation activities, validate successful resolution, and document remediation efforts. The role requires strong troubleshooting skills, sound judgment, and the ability to work independently while supporting operational and security objectives.
Responsibilities:
- Review vulnerability management data to identify Linux systems requiring remediation.
- Log into Linux servers and investigate reported vulnerabilities.
- Determine whether reported vulnerabilities are applicable to individual systems by validating installed packages, software versions, and configurations.
- Perform operating system and package-level remediation activities.
- Research vulnerabilities and remediation methods when additional investigation is required.
- Install, update, patch, or remove software packages to remediate vulnerabilities.
- Validate remediation activities and confirm vulnerabilities have been successfully addressed.
- Identify and investigate false positives or findings that may not apply to specific systems.
- Coordinate with application and business owners when remediation activities require downtime, reboot windows, or application validation.
- Support change management processes and scheduled maintenance activities.
- Document remediation efforts, remediation status, and outstanding issues.
- Collaborate with vulnerability management, automation, and systems engineering teams to improve remediation processes.
- Identify recurring remediation patterns that may be suitable for automation.
- Troubleshoot Linux operating system issues encountered during remediation activities.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience supporting or administering Linux operating systems.
- Hands-on experience with Oracle Enterprise Linux (OEL) is required.
- Ability to independently navigate and administer Linux operating systems.
- Strong experience using Linux commands and utilities to investigate systems and troubleshoot issues.
- Ability to identify installed software packages, versions, and system configuration information.
- Understanding of Linux patching, package management, and system maintenance.
- Ability to research vulnerabilities and determine appropriate remediation approaches.
- Basic understanding of system security concepts and vulnerability remediation practices.
- Ability to work independently and investigate technical issues without step-by-step guidance.
- Strong analytical and troubleshooting capabilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting Ubuntu, Solaris, and/or AIX environments.
- Previous experience supporting vulnerability management or security remediation programs.
- Experience using vulnerability management platforms such as Tenable, Nessus, or similar technologies.
- Experience with Linux security hardening and configuration remediation.
- Experience working within change management processes and maintenance windows.
- Exposure to scripting, automation, or systems administration automation tools.
- Experience supporting enterprise-scale infrastructure or data center environments.
