Role: Sr. ABAP Developer (S/4HANA & SAP BTP)

Location: Dearborn, MI (Hybrid 4 days/week Onsite)

Duration: Long Term Contract

Position Overview:

• This role is responsible for designing, developing, testing, and maintaining SAP-based software applications to meet evolving business requirements.
• The engineer will participate across the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), including architecture design, coding, quality assurance, and deployment.
• The position emphasizes modern ABAP development in S/4HANA environments, cloud extensibility via SAP BTP, and adherence to Clean Core principles.

Key Responsibilities:

• Engage with business stakeholders to understand use cases, pain points, and functional requirements, ensuring user-centric solution design.
• Design and deliver scalable SAP solutions using modern ABAP frameworks and agile methodologies.
• Assess application requirements and determine appropriate technology stacks, integration approaches, and deployment strategies.
• Develop high-level and low-level technical design documents outlining system architecture, components, and interfaces.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Product Owners, Architects, UX Designers, and Infrastructure teams.
• Define and implement test strategies aligned with enterprise standards and industry best practices.
• Continuously improve application performance and development efficiency through optimization and modern tooling.
• Apply programming best practices including TDD, CI/CD, and version control.
• Implement security best practices including encryption, anonymization, and secure API development.
• Develop and optimize backend services including APIs, microservices, and integration components.
• Evaluate and adopt emerging SAP technologies and modern extensibility options.
• Provide technical leadership, conduct code reviews, and mentor junior developers.

Required Skills:

Core ABAP Expertise

• Strong proficiency in Object-Oriented ABAP (OOPS)
• Advanced SQLScript and performance tuning
• Expertise in ABAP debugging and optimization

Modern SAP Development

• Hands-on experience with RAP (RESTful ABAP Programming Model)
• Experience with BOPF (Business Object Processing Framework)
• Strong knowledge of CDS Views, Annotations, and Virtual Data Models (VDM)
• Development and debugging of OData Services (V2/V4) and REST APIs

S/4HANA & Clean Core

• Design and implementation using Cloud-Optimized ABAP
• Development of complex CDS Views with associations, aggregations, and table functions
• Experience maintaining legacy ABAP (BAdIs, User Exits, Enhancements) and planning modernization
• Drive Clean Core strategy using in-app and side-by-side extensibility

SAP BTP & Extensions

• Understanding of SAP BTP subaccounts, destinations, and connectivity services
• Experience building and deploying side-by-side extensions
• Exposure to SAP Build, Event Mesh, and ABAP Cloud (Steampunk) preferred

UI & Integration

• Familiarity with SAP Fiori/UI5 (backend integration understanding)
• API-led integration with external systems

Experience Required

• 10+ years of overall IT experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in S/4HANA implementation or migration projects
• Strong understanding of API-first architecture and enterprise integration patterns
• Experience mentoring developers and leading technical design discussions
