Summary

We believe power is a promise - a shared commitment to be there for others when it matters most.

For more than 65 years, we've turned big ideas into solutions that help protect homes, strengthen businesses and build a more resilient, efficient, sustainable energy future.

Ready to Power a Smarter World with us?

At Generac, we are accelerating the transformation of the electric grid through advanced microgrid technologies, distributed energy resources (DERs), and intelligent control systems.

We are seeking a highly motivated Microgrid Controls Engineering Intern/Co-Op to join our Industrial Microgrid Controls Team in Fort Collins, Colorado. This position offers a unique opportunity to apply advanced data analytics, artificial intelligence, and power systems engineering to improve the performance, reliability, and operation of real-world microgrid deployments.

Working alongside experienced controls, software, and power systems engineers, you will analyze operational data from fielded systems, identify performance improvement opportunities, develop predictive insights, validate next-generation control strategies through Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing, and contribute to the future of intelligent energy systems.

Unlike traditional engineering internships, this role provides direct exposure to operational microgrid assets and customer applications, where your work may directly influence future products, system architectures, and customer outcomes.

Major Responsibilities

Data Analytics & System Intelligence
  • Analyze large data sets from deployed microgrid, energy storage, and distributed energy resource systems to identify trends, anomalies, reliability concerns, and optimization opportunities. Transform this operational data into actionable engineering recommendations.
  • Develop advanced analytics, dashboards, and visualization tools to improve customer value, operational performance, and fleet-wide system insights.
  • Infer from the above analysis what statistical, machine learning, and AI-based approaches may support predictive maintenance, fault detection, and root cause analysis efforts going forward.

Next-Generation Controls Validation
  • Design and conduct off-nominal, fault, and edge-case testing scenarios to evaluate system robustness and reliability through model in the loop (MIL) and hardware in the loop (HIL) setups.
  • Support verification and validation efforts for advanced microgrid control architectures.

AI & Engineering Productivity
  • Develop AI agents and automation tools to enhance sales applications engineering, technical support, and internal engineering workflows.
  • Investigate emerging AI technologies and their application to power systems, controls engineering, and customer support.

Systems Engineering & Innovation
  • Support development of engineering standards, analytics processes, and best practices.
  • Engage with Generac's academic and national laboratory partners to investigate emerging technologies and evolving industry challenges.
