Job Description
We are seeking a Linguist III to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have strong experience in theoretical linguistics, corpus linguistics, and applied NLP techniques and a proven ability to analyze model outputs, craft annotation guidelines, and communicate findings to cross-functional partners.
Responsibilities:
- Perform linguistic analyses on large datasets.
- Conduct linguistic error analysis of AI model outputs and determine frequent and severe error categories.
- Write and revise guidelines for human annotation and AI projects, including translation tasks.
- Conduct typological and sociolinguistic research across many languages, highlighting similarities and differences.
- Perform Responsible AI linguistic analyses in multilingual settings, including toxic language, hate speech, gender bias, and other cultural biases.
- Conduct literature reviews on NLP-adjacent topics and summarize findings.
- Compare vendor deliveries, identify error patterns, and provide actionable feedback.
- Provide guidance on typology, morpho-syntax, sociolinguistics, classification, phonetics/phonology, and pragmatics.
- Engage and collaborate with native speakers across languages.
- Communicate analysis results to engineers and research scientists.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- PhD in Linguistics in hand. No substitutions from Literature, English, Computer Science (NLP), or Computational Linguistics.
- Near-native or native proficiency in English and one language from: Central Philippine (Filipino, Tagalog, Cebuano), Tai-Kadai (Thai, Lao), Bantu (Swahili), Northwestern Semitic (Hebrew), Ethiosemitic.
- Strong written and spoken communication skills for business and research contexts.
- Coding proficiency in Python and ability to query databases using SQL. Other data analysis languages are a plus.
- Firm grasp of language typology, syntax, morphology, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, writing systems, pragmatics, and phonology.
- Experience applying basic NLP techniques.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize, plan, track work, and report progress. Self-motivation required.
Preferred Skills:
- Proficiency in a low-resource language. Working knowledge of additional languages.
- Background or specialization in corpus linguistics. Field work experience.
- Familiarity with international language-classification standards.
- Education or training in the basics of project management.
Experience:
- 0-3 years of relevant experience.
- Cross-functional collaboration experience.
- Collaboration with machine learning, NLP, or software engineers, or data scientists.
- Contributions to research papers. Preferably no known conflicts of interest in MT, ASR, TTS, or LLM research.
