Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced SQL Operations DBA with strong cloud migration expertise to support a multi-year initiative transitioning on-premises SQL environments into Google Cloud Platform (Google Cloud Platform). This role is ideal for a DBA passionate about automation, infrastructure-as-code, and modernizing database deployment pipelines. The SQL DBA will work within a collaborative team of database administrators and partner with engineering and application teams to design, build, and maintain scalable, cloud-ready SQL environments. A strong background in SQL, T-SQL, Terraform, GitLab, and cloud technologies (Google Cloud Platform or AWS) is essential.
Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
- Lead the migration of SQL applications from on-premises environments to Google Cloud as part of a structured, multi-year cloud modernization program.
- Design the architectural migration plan for each application, including environment build-out, repository setup, pipeline automation, and standardized playbook creation.
- Build and enhance Terraform templates, automations, and GitLab pipelines to support cloud deployments.
- Evaluate and improve existing artifacts and processes developed by partner LOBs—or create new ones where needed.
- Ensure proper configuration for ongoing maintenance, monitoring, backups, DR, and troubleshooting within the new cloud environments.
- Collaborate with engineering, architecture, and application teams to ensure secure, compliant, and performant migration patterns.
- During non-migration periods, receive training and perform on-prem SQL environment maintenance, troubleshooting, and day-to-day operational tasks.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts across cloud, automation, and database operations.
Qualifications:
- Required Skills & Experience
- 5+ years as a SQL Operations DBA with deep expertise in SQL Server administration.
- Hand-on experience with on-prem to cloud SQL migrations (Google Cloud Platform or AWS preferred).
- Strong proficiency in PowerShell scripting (preferred) and/or T-SQL.
- Experience with Terraform for infrastructure-as-code.
- Familiarity with GitLab for source control and CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong understanding of cloud-native architectures, networking, security, IAM, and automated provisioning in Google Cloud Platform or AWS.
- Experience creating architecture documentation, runbooks, and operational playbooks.
- Ability to troubleshoot performance issues, availability problems, and operational incidents in both cloud and on-prem SQL environments.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience migrating or modernizing mission-critical SQL applications.
- Knowledge of Google Cloud SQL, GCE, GKE, BigQuery, or associated data services.
- Familiarity with SRE/DevOps principles and operational automation frameworks.
- Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.
