This vacancy is for a GS-0850-07, Electrical Engineer located in the Department of Homeland Security, US Coast Guard Yard, Engineering Branch in Baltimore, MD.

You will serve as an Electrical Engineer and be responsible for research, development, design, evaluation, construction, inspection, production, application, standardization, testing, or operation of engineering facilities, structures, systems, processes, equipment, devices, or materials.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:

• Works with systems, plants, equipment, and materials for the generation, transmission, conversion, distribution, control, measurement, or utilization of electrical energy on board Coast Guard ships and boats.
• Works for the installation of equipment that is located in secure facilities/spaces, as well as the handling and installation of secure equipment.
• Designs new or modifies existing electrical systems on board Coast Guard vessels.
• Develops detailed specifications to support maintenance and repair of shipboard systems.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements: This position has a positive Education Requirement in addition to at least one year of Specialized Experience or substitution of education for experience or combination (if applicable) in order to be found minimally qualified. Transcripts must be submitted with your application package. You MUST meet the following requirements:

EDUCATION: A 4-year bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Qualifications and 1year of Post Graduate work.

Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

AND

You qualify for the GS-07 level if you are a Recent Graduate and possess one of the following:

You qualify for a GS-7: Completion of 1 full year of graduate level education, and a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement.

Specialized Experience for a GS-07: Applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience at the next lower grade GS-05, or equivalent in other pay systems. Examples of specialized experience include performing the following types of tasks on a regular basis regular basis.

• Experience analyzing, evaluating, developing and integrating detailed construction and installation plans.
• Experience developing procurement documentation for various projects.
• Experience reviewing technical work such as maintenance requirements, specifications, designs, etc.

OR

Education: Successfully completed 1 full year of graduate level education or superior academic achievement that is directly related to the work of the position. NOTE: You must submit a copy of transcripts.

OR

Combination of Experience and Education: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of transcripts.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). You must have, within the previous 2 years, completed all educational requirements for a qualifying associate, bachelor, masters, professional, doctorate, vocational or technical degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution which may include Registered Apprenticeship Programs, Job Corps, AmeriCorps, and Peace Corps; or intended graduation is no more than 9 months from date of application.
