We are seeking an experienced Senior Network Engineer to implement, support, document, and maintain the IT network infrastructure for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). This on-site position plays a crucial role in managing enterprise routers, switches, firewalls, VPN concentrators, wireless access points, and load balancers. The Senior Engineer will design fault-tolerant LAN/WAN architectures, troubleshoot complex network performance issues, collaborate with cloud and DevSecOps teams on hybrid connectivity/SD-WAN configurations, and maintain enterprise topology documentation.

Key Responsibilities
- Enterprise Infrastructure Operations: Set up, configure, upgrade, monitor, and troubleshoot enterprise network hardware, including routers, switches, firewalls, VPN concentrators, wireless access points, and load balancers.
- Network Design & Architecture: Design, implement, and maintain scalable, reliable, and fault-tolerant local-area (LAN) and wide-area (WAN) enterprise networks.
- Hybrid & Cloud Integration: Partner with cloud infrastructure and DevSecOps teams to optimize hybrid network connectivity, cloud network topologies, and SD-WAN implementations.
- Troubleshooting & Performance Tuning: Identify and diagnose complex system outages using line monitors, diagnostic tools, and test equipment; perform metrics collection, performance tuning, and disaster recovery planning.
- Documentation & Standards Compliance: Create and maintain comprehensive network architecture diagrams (Visio), IP address schemes, firewall rules, and access control lists (ACLs) in alignment with agency security standards.
- Vendor & Stakeholder Collaboration: Partner with external suppliers, telecom providers, and internal IT teams to align network configurations and specifications with project requirements.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Network Hardware & Infrastructure: 8+ years of hands-on experience configuring, deploying, and troubleshooting enterprise routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, and VPNs.
- Networking Protocols: 8+ years of expertise in core routing and switching protocols, including BGP, OSPF, EIGRP, ARP, CDP, VTP, EtherChannel, 802.1Q trunking, HSRP, QoS, Multicast, IPsec, RADITACACS+, SNMP, and MPLS.
- Enterprise LAN/WAN Engineering: 8+ years of experience designing fault-tolerant enterprise network architectures, executing disaster recovery plans, and utilizing network diagnostic software.
- Technical Documentation: 8+ years of experience creating detailed network topology diagrams, firewall rule-sets, and IP schemes using industry-standard tools (e.g., Microsoft Visio).
- Information Security & Governance: 8+ years of experience monitoring IT environments for adherence to information security policies and architecture standards.
- Certification: Active industry-standard networking certification (e.g., Cisco CCNA, CCNP, Juniper JNCIA-Junos, or equivalent).
Preferred Qualifications
- SD-WAN Experience: 3+ years of experience configuring, deploying, and managing Software-Defined Wide Area Networking (SD-WAN) solutions.
- Cloud Networking: 3+ years of experience designing and managing cloud networking topologies and hybrid enterprise connectivity (AWS, Azure, or OCI).
