Position Summary

Our Client  is hiring a Registered Nurse I on behalf of its client, a District of Columbia government agency responsible for administering the District's workers' compensation, safety, and risk management programs. The Registered Nurse I provides comprehensive medical case management services in support of the Public Sector Workers' Compensation Program and the Return-to-Work Program, coordinating care among injured workers, treating physicians, employers, and other stakeholders to promote recovery and safe return to work outcomes. This position works onsite in a shared, open office environment during core operating hours of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time, Monday through Friday, and does not perform duties on federal or District holidays or during administrative closings.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive medical case management services in support of the Public Sector Workers' Compensation Program and the Return to Work Program.
  • Conduct medical assessments and evaluate injured workers' clinical status, treatment plans, functional capabilities, and recovery progress to facilitate timely and appropriate medical care.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and revise individualized case management plans designed to promote recovery, maximize medical improvement, and facilitate safe return to work outcomes.
  • Coordinate and manage medical care among injured workers, treating physicians, specialists, rehabilitation providers, employers, supervisors, and other stakeholders to ensure continuity of care and effective case resolution.
  • Review and evaluate medical records, treatment plans, utilization requests, and related documentation to determine medical necessity, appropriateness of care, and compliance with applicable workers' compensation guidelines.
  • Conduct utilization review, treatment plan review, and medical billing review to support cost effective and medically appropriate care.
  • Identify claims suitable for return to work initiatives and collaborate with agency representatives and healthcare providers to develop and implement transitional duty assignments and workplace accommodations.
  • Establish return to work status, projected recovery timelines, maximum medical improvement targets, work restrictions, and functional capacity recommendations based on medical evidence and provider input.
  • Monitor injured workers throughout the recovery process, including pre return to work and post return to work activities, to ensure successful reintegration into the workplace.
  • Communicate regularly with injured workers, supervisors, healthcare providers, agency representatives, claims examiners, and other stakeholders regarding case status, treatment progress, return to work planning, and medical management activities.
  • Prepare medical status reports, case summaries, recommendations, and other documentation to support claim administration, program management, and decision making.
  • Provide consultation, guidance, and training to agency personnel regarding workers' compensation medical management, return to work strategies, injury prevention, and transitional duty programs.
  • Present medical findings, case assessments, and professional recommendations during claim reviews, mediations, administrative hearings, and other proceedings as required.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and complete case documentation in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and professional standards.
  • Safeguard confidential medical and personnel information and ensure compliance with all applicable privacy and security requirements.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned in support of the Public Sector Workers' Compensation Program and the Return to Work Program.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Graduation from an accredited professional nursing program recognized by the applicable state accrediting authority.
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the District of Columbia.
  • At least one (1) year of specialized professional nursing experience involving medical assessment, planning, implementation, utilization review, and evaluation of patient progress.
  • Clinical experience in orthopaedics, neurology, rehabilitation, or utilization review.
  • Knowledge of clinical concepts, case management principles, healthcare regulations, and workers' compensation related medical issues.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and electronic medical and claims systems.

 

Additional Requirements

  • Selected candidates must successfully complete a local criminal history record check within the District of Columbia and a national criminal history record check through an FBI approved channeler, including fingerprinting, in accordance with D.C. Code Section 4-1501.03.
  • Selected candidates must participate in an orientation with the agency Human Resources Officer covering standards of conduct, dress code, cyber security, and ethics, and must complete assigned online training as requested.
  • Selected candidates must safeguard the integrity, security, and confidentiality of all personnel and medical information and records in compliance with the Electronic District Personnel Manual, Chapter 31, Records Management and Privacy of Records.
  • Selected candidates are responsible for their own transportation to and from the duty location and may not bill for transportation time, breaks, or lunch breaks.
  • Selected candidates may not represent themselves as employees of the District of Columbia at any time.
  • Selected candidates must record time worked through a web-based timekeeping system for weekly review and approval by the client.
