Summary

Description
Ideal Candidate Profile:
The best fit is someone who has already worked through messy data reconciliation or inventory cleanup efforts and can point to a past example where they helped clean, consolidate, and standardize multiple data sets. They do not need to be overly senior, but they need to have successfully done this type of work before. They emphasized that someone with even 3+ years of experience could work if they have truly been hands-on with reconciliation, cleansing, and inventory cleanup and can speak clearly to how they approached it.
This person should be analytical, detail-oriented, comfortable with ambiguity, and able to work independently. They should be able to look at imperfect data, identify patterns, make logical recommendations, document how they reached conclusions, and communicate where human review or stakeholder validation is needed.
Our client is looking for a Data Analyst to support a high-priority Technology Governance initiative focused on building a current, complete, and accurate business application inventory. This work is tied to regulatory expectations across the financial services industry and will help establish CMDB/business application inventory as the go-forward single source of truth for their business applications.
This is a non-traditional data analyst role focused heavily on data reconciliation, data cleansing, data quality, and inventory cleanup. The analyst will work across roughly 9-10 inconsistent and incomplete data sets, primarily in Excel, to identify duplicate or related business applications, normalize naming conventions, reconcile conflicting records, and help move the organization toward a cleaner, more reliable inventory.
The ideal candidate has hands-on experience taking messy, incomplete data sets and turning them into a clean, structured, usable source of truth. They should be comfortable working through ambiguity, identifying patterns across inconsistent naming conventions, documenting their process, and communicating findings clearly. Experience with application inventories, CMDB, ServiceNow, data matching, deduplication, normalization, and financial services governance environments would be helpful.
Key Responsibilities
Reconcile 9-10 separate business application data sets into a cleaner, more consistent inventory.
Compare and match records across inconsistent naming conventions, incomplete fields, and non-standard definitions.
Use Excel and other available tools to cleanse, normalize, deduplicate, and validate application data.
Identify where applications appear to be the same or closely related and determine confidence levels in those matches.
Support data quality efforts by researching application names, vendor changes, end-of-life applications, ownership details, and inventory standards.
Help create a more accurate business application inventory that can support CMDB and regulatory expectations going forward.
Document reconciliation logic, cleansing steps, assumptions, and recommended standards.
Provide recommendations for future-state processes around onboarding, certification, application classification, naming standards, and ongoing inventory maintenance.
Partner with application owners or internal stakeholders when certain records require review or confirmation.
Support the foundation for a future steady-state governance process around business application inventory management.
Required Experience / Skills
Experience with data reconciliation, data cleansing, data quality, or inventory cleanup work.
Strong Excel skills and comfort working with large, messy data sets.
Ability to work with incomplete data, inconsistent naming conventions, and ambiguous requirements.
Understanding of relational data concepts, data matching, deduplication, and normalization.
Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accuracy while working through large volumes of records.
Ability to document steps, logic, findings, and recommendations clearly.
Strong problem-solving skills and comfort creating structure in an undefined environment.
Good communication skills, especially when explaining data issues, assumptions, and next steps.
Experience working with application inventories, software inventories, CMDB, or ServiceNow business application data is helpful.
Financial services, banking, or regulated industry experience is a plus.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Skills
SQL is preferred but not required.
ServiceNow CMDB or business application inventory experience.
Experience with application lifecycle concepts, including active, and end-of-life applications.
Experience using tools such as Alteryx, Python, Copilot, Cursor AI, or other automation/AI tools specifically for data reconciliation, cleansing, matching, or quality work.
Experience building or improving data standards, naming conventions, inventory definitions, or go-forward governance processes.
