Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking a dynamic senior-level architectural historian in the western portion of the Great Lakes Region, defined as Minnesota, Iowa, North Dakota, and South Dakota. The position will work in close coordination with the architectural history and cultural team leaders in the Great Lakes region. Responsibilities include but are not limited to supporting staff and project management, proposal development, client development, and overall quality of report deliverables. Qualified applicants should be able to demonstrate good leadership and judgement qualities, strong technical skills, excellent communication skills, and feel comfortable making technical decisions with minimal supervision.

This position is primarily a hybrid office/home office position (candidates need to reside in one of the states noted above) with occasional travel to project sites throughout the region in which the applicant is located.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Management of junior and mid-level architectural historians
  • Assist with creating a business plan for the region in coordination with the architectural history team leaders, business center office leaders, and regional growth leaders
  • Ensure high-quality architectural history projects, that include background research, built environment field work, contextual analysis, recommendations of NRHP eligibility, and report preparation
  • Assist with client development, such as historic architectural work with internal Stantec Project Managers and various external clients for Section 106 and state historic resource protection reviews
  • Perform project management duties, as needed, such as scoping, costing, and invoicing in collaboration with the project accounting team
  • Coordinate with other Stantec staff to ensure the quality of data, field work, and documentation

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Experience managing and/or mentoring junior-to-mid-level staff
  • Experience managing or eagerness to learn development of scoping and costing for historic architectural projects
  • Extensive knowledge and experience working with Section 106 of National Historic Preservation Act, including working through all steps of the 106 review process (initiate, identify, assess effects, and resolve adverse effects)
  • Experience developing evaluations for the National Register of Historic Places
  • Past work interpreting the Secretary of Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties is preferred
  • Experience writing/producing and/or reviewing technical reports related to Section 106 or state historic resource protection regulations; strong writing and research skills
  • Fluency using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) as well as Adobe Acrobat
  • Working knowledge of mapping and ARCGIS-related programs
  • Ability to travel regionally for project work
  • Ability to complete physically demanding tasks in urban and rural settings and/or hot and dry climates, including walking, hiking, and field navigating
  • Must have a valid driver's license with a good driving record

Education and Professional Experience
  • Master's degree in Historic Preservation, Public History, History, or closely related field preferred
  • Ten or more years of professional experience

About the Team

Pay Transparency: In compliance with pay transparency laws, pay ranges are provided for positions in locations where required. Please note, the final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible. Actual compensation for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on the agreed number of working hours per week.
